EastEnders "Phil On Remand" was better than much of the dross served up by the soap over recent years. (BBC red button, just over 10 minutes long).

I'd love to know what these mysterious long-standing "cracks" are in EastEnders. Whatever they are, they've gone completely unnoticed by the BBC, yet are apparently abundantly clear to a group of people on the Ratings Thread.
The problems are clearly, then, nothing to do with bad casting and storylining decisions made in the last 18 months. Eastenders has always had bigger ups and downs in terms of quality than Corrie. EE seems to do the big, gritty plots very well but tends to have bad patches. Where as Corrie seems to plod along the middle ground much better without generally hitting the high points as often. That philosophy has existed for both shows for as long as I have been following them and both have been successful because of it. I would say Eastenders's bad patch at the moment is down to not much happening, too many filler plots and focus on dull characters. not much else. |

I don't get why they didn't air the storyline on the main show - it would've been an interesting perspective against Ben's attitude.
![]() It was brilliant. EastEnders at it's very best and i thought it was well written. Should have been much longer So Kirkwood is off then. I guess it was expected because these days EP only last around 2 years anyway. Hopefully kirkwood will go out with a Bang and Mondays (Heather's Murder episode & Aftermath) will do well. It's nice to see The BBC promoting it as Monday 19th March at 8:00pm but it seems the trailer has not been shown in England yet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fK7tnc_eFac

I assume we didnt see Phil inside, so the viewers would see him as Shirley did. Also whilst tonight's red button focused on the key parts of the storyline, adding this storyline to the proper episodes over the two weeks, would have required more scenes to be shot.

Got bored of Paxman's Empire, so watching a bit of Scott & Bailey instead.
And it's even duller! It's like they decided to make a more pedestrian version of Cagney & Lacey for New Tricks fans, set in Oldham. ![]() Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the blueprint ITV set out when they commissioned it... |

Good news for The Taxpayers' Alliance (aka GeorgeS) - the rugby peaked at 6.2m on BBC1 yesterday (Sam Hodges)

what has that got to do with Taxpayers Alliance?
And the other is a well known political pressure group... Quote:

They've made it look like an action-packed remake of the 1997 movie. How odd... |

Just to put down a marker for tomorrow's ratings when they come out:
Scott & Bailey series 1, episode 1: 8.3m (overnight), 9.42m (official) Tougher slot for the start of that series - not only did it air in a late May heatwave, it was up against the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Shoes on BBC1 which got 4.90m. Tonight it has a 3m rated documentary/regional variations. Note also for comparison purposes that when it comes to plodding Monday 9pm detective procedurals, New Tricks started its most recent series last July with 8.25m in the overnights. |

That's hardly a marker considering it dropped 1.8m viewers for episode two.
9.42m -- 8.05m -- 6.95m -- 7.24m -- 7.28m -- 7.49m |

In terms of today's newly released proper ratings (which I think would pass largely unnoticed on this, the Ratings Thread ffs!, if it wasn't for me):
UpDown (well, just "down" really ) - 5.86m - still OK really, and still hard not to recommission it if it stays in the 5m+ regionLet's Dance - 5.87m - ditto Homeland - 2.78m - the show that, for me, is doing the damage to UD EastEnders In Crisis - 9.25m/9.21m/8.88m/8.07m - all perfectly acceptable March ratings, no reason for alarm whatsoever Prisoners' Wives - 5.0m - should come back, but don't put it up against BFGW/The Brits MasterChef - 4.50m/4.55m - not good enough Top Gear - 5.81m - sub 6m; obviously fantastic for a BBC2 show, but yet... |

![]() We see so much on this thread about year on year, comparative episode with comparative episode etc. Why would we compare tonight's ep with ep 2 of s1? ![]() Quote:
You should mention it did have a lead-in from Britain's Got Talent...
See also Benidorm's unfathomably decent ratings on Fridays. |

Notice the 'story' about The Voice on BBC News Website today, thinly disguised as a discussion story but blatently a promotional piece.
Amusingly the 'have your say' was mostly negative (usually on the lines of, we don't expect the BBC to be doing this sort of stuff best left to ITV) besides the editors choice comments which were all positive! |

Spotted the F1 "racing line" trailer on BBC1 before QOS. How humiliating for them to be too embarrassed to advertise their "extended" highlights and live coverage only on radio, and thus simply trumpet "The Oz GP this weekend across the BBC". No days and times, nothing. Quote:

Whats wrong with BBC News promoting a BBC show?
And before you retort with all this moral relativity crap just because someone else may do it does not make it right for BBC "News" to do it. |
