Looks like DOI failed to clear 7m for the main show and was sub 6m for the results - it got 7.2 and 6.0 including repeat showings on the ITV1+1 channel.

WAH only had 6.2m including second showing.

Two dying shows.

In fairness the final was slightly rushed last year from what I remember. It was the same length as the last two BGT finals with the same number of acts, and has more content than BGT as the top 3 acts perform again (there's a vote freeze where the top 3 make it through and the rest are eliminated). It wasn't padded last night at all.


Normally I'd agree but Derek has a point with this one. GTD is very good. Must Be The Music was terrible though, I'll agree there.

The Sun today confirms BGT is set to return on the same night, and will overlap each week to ensure TV is snuffed out in the ratings.

Sensible move by ITV. I wish them every success.

All three major commercial channels boosted their share yesterday compared to last Sunday, between them commanding more than 2 extra share points:

I know that X-Factor likes bland people with good voices, but you can have a good voice and be an interesting person.

Im pretty sure that most truly talented musicians, are 1,000 times more interesting than any reality TV show contestant.

I think where the BBC is going wrong with The Voice, is that it is not focusing on finding a complete artist, but I guess that is kinda what Fame Academy was meant to be about, and that flopped.

Listen to a show like Radcliffe and Maconie on 6 Music, and whilst it may not have the latest X-Factor runner up, talking about being the latest X-Factor runner up, it has artists with music in their soul, artists who have spent years singing at festivals, years becoming the true artists they are, and are only to happy to talk about what inspires their musical. This is something you dont see on reality TV shows, and I dont think The Voice will have it either.

Heck the before mentioned Dermot O Leary Radio 2 show, does similar, if with a more mainstream type of artist.

A show that is no longer in the big league. 6.08m for WAH, a sure that will no doubt soon be feeling the vet's needle in the back of its neck...

Viewing does look generally down, with UD feeling the squeeze with 5.1m. Perhaps 2012 will be the year viewers tire of period drama?

The Voice isn't 'serious' though. The judges sit in big spinning red chairs how serious do people really think this show can be? Certainly it weeds out the joke acts that have become the bread and butter of The X Factor but I think people are perhaps spinning the whole looking for someone that can actually sing a little too hard. The Voice is still very much an entertainment show which is why its found so much success elsewhere.

The BBC desperately needs to start properly trailing this show so that the wider audience can get a better grip on what it actually is.

I have never liked the look of those chairs, and them spinning around does them no favours. Obviously the judges wearing a blind fold would be silly, but the chairs just dont look good to me.

Huge drop for Upstairs. I can see it being axed.

Really glad to see Homeland keeping its head above water.

And incredibly happy to see Being Human up. Isn't that an increase of about 200k vs. last week? That can't be bad.

I don't disagree on the spinning chairs. I can list off a long list of a reasons why they shouldn't work but I think despite all that they kind of do. There's something brilliantly mad about the whole thing within the context of the show and it stops everyone involved from taking the whole thing too seriously. And the blind audition concept does make for some really good telly.

I fear I've become a cheerleader for The Voice in this thread though. I do really like the format though.

On the subject of The Voice/Talent clash I can't help but wonder if it might be in ITV's best interest to delay for at least a week for any number of reasons. If nothing else they can hope that the BBC does what it usually does with these big formats and completely self destructs resulting in the audience not wanting to stick around for week two.

Solid enough for BBC One's lineup but they probably didn't expect Countryfile to be their strongest link at this point. I don't think we can conclude that viewers are tiring of period drama just because the BBC's latest attempt isn't catching on much. I've had it on good authority from multiple sources that UD simply isn't very good and doesn't even come close to Downton Abbey's quality. That's a more likely reason for the underwhelming numbers I would suggest.

Channel 4 meanwhile had plenty to be pleased about last night. Homeland did not suffer from the usual drop these US dramas experience for episode 3, it must be surpassing even C4's own expectations by now. Warhorse rated well in the 8pm hour after a bit of a disastrous start to the night at 7pm. Inglorious should have done better, great film. But for the late slot it did respectably enough.

The Da Vinci Code rated well once again for Channel 5, but the scheduling of an Ultimate Police Interceptors rerun in the key 9pm timeslot was a predictably disastrous decision. It seems almost every Sunday now they will schedule a random factual repeat at either 8pm or 9pm that ends up dragging down their night, when will they learn that this is not a good strategy?

BBC Two were well above average for much of the evening. Orbit: Earth's Extraordinary Journey rated extremely well after another solid outing for Top Gear.

^^ I actually prefer Upstairs to Downton. Its the comparisons that have killed it.

The only way I can see the BBC bringing it back for a 3rd series though is if they are desperate to keep Heidi Thomas sweet.

Just when you think ITV can't get any more pathetic. Trying to blame the BBC, when everybody knows BGT usually launches in mid-April, not March.

Britain's Got Talent and The Voice launching on the same night and possibly overlapping for a time is bad news for viewers, as effectively it means less choice as well as inconveniencing their fans, and ultimately it's bad news for both broadcasters, as these shows will not achieve their full potential in those circumstances. Therefore ITV could suffer the most as they have commercial pressures to consider.

Now don't get me wrong a bit of healthy competition every now and again is fine but when they take it to this kind of extreme you start to lose faith in the people running these channels if it's more important to them who wins rather than maximising the audience for their biggest shows. The truth is, they will both be losers!

Well the BBC have Call The Midwife and filming begins for the 2nd series in July. If by any chance they get it completed by the time Downton Abbey is back I wouldn't be surprised to see the BBC pitch CTM against DA on purpose as revenge not only for the way ITV luvvies have killed Upstairs Downstairs but also for the way they are now going after The Voice.
