it is interesting how much its being linked to Downton Abbey, rather than being sold in its own right. Which (looking into it) is odd as whilst it is written by Julian Fellowes, it isnt produced by Carnival Films (the production company behind Downton Abbey) so it may not be the equal to Downton people think it will be.
Also 4 episodes, whilst im sure it would do just fine (7 - 8 million easy) as a single or two parter, im not sure that will last over 4 episode. how many times do people really need to see the ship sink? Quote:
It really is doing extraordinary numbers for Seven at the moment. You'd imagine it can't be long before this show proves irresistible for a UK broadcaster, too. My money would be on Channel 4.
The UK broadcasters have been a lot slower to pick things up this year. Person of Interest is also lacking a UK home and that's starting to raise serious eyebrows given the numbers in the US. Person of Interest is a slightly more interesting one. Given the push that was given by CBS (a fairly safe pair of hands for US procedurals) I'm surprised more people haven't bitten. I would assume that's down to pricing. Abrams name will mean that its asking for a lot and the international market seems to have learnt the lesson that the US market hasn't, namely that Abrams does not add up to viewers. Having said that again its not a very good show although I'm told it has gotten better as the season has progressed. To be completely honest its been a pretty uninspired couple of years for drama in the US (for broadcast) and that's why no one is buying. In part this is because the networks have mostly been focusing on finding new comedies (Channel 4, Sky and Comedy Central are really the only channels in the market for US comedy at this stage and they have been buying those). Exactly. They do not show "all" of any of these...

No, the ITV schedule was supposed to be...
Perhaps there is a lesson there if the Beeb are thinking of putting Palin's Brazil up against Downton this autumn. Strange choices as you say for BBC1 and ITV in their original schedules for the Sunday 9pm slot - Airplane II and an Alright on the Night repeat. And we complain about New Tricks repeats today... |

For anyone interested, Palin talks about his new series here:
http://palinstravels.co.uk/static-217 4 parts, due in September - so it might be done and dusted before Downton pitches its tent in the Sunday 9pm slot. |

just watched http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o47uKMoTYGw this video explaining the "Blind Auditions" on The Voice
My first feeling is that this round at least reminds me of Dragons Den, the coaches obviously being the Dragons. Then I remembered that the Dragons are not on swinging chairs, and know full well what they are investing in. Also for the talk of the coaches competing to mentor a singer, the 4 coaches all come from a different background, Tom Jones and Will.i.am being the best example of this, and whilst a varied panel is good for the show, its going to e fairly easy for everyone to know who would make the best coach. Also with all due respect to Jessie J, she is hardly the most experienced of the group, its a shame they cant have got another female judge, like say Andrea Corr. In the past ive come up with a format (lets call it "Charnham Format #422"), which would see young musicans paired with someone like Damon Albarn, on the Oasis Brothers, Andrea Corr, Ringo Star. The young artist would spend a week or two with the legend, who will help them with skills like their voice, song writing, performance etc. Obviously people ill be paired off with a legend must helpful to them. The end show, is the young artists preforming with the legend, preforming a new song, and a cover of a song of their choosing. Whilst it is unfair for me to compare The Voice to a made up format, I cant help but feel The Voice is not my made up format, and too gimmicky. |

But they did show every minute of every lap of every session for the last three seasons. They have a nerve to run trailers that hold out the BBC as the home of F1, "we are the racing line", what a load of guff. They should have had their expensive poncey marketing agency come up with something like: "BBC F1: Doesn't Tom Jones have a fancy swivel chair?" Quote:
Although Homeland is shown on Showtime it's owned by its production company Fox 21 (part of NewsCorp).
It's quite common for NewsCorp to sell its shows to Sky's competitors in the UK, so it's not "Peter paying Paul" and to give them more exposure and no doubt the possibiliity of Sky acquiring them in the future. I trust all the Murdoch haters are boycotting this show!! You only have to look at how much Glee has fallen since it moved to Sky1, often under 1m in the officials and beaing beaten by numerous other Sky shows. |

Maybe the BBC have sneakily delayed the ratings knowing Corrie had huge episodes last night while Eastenders had another teen filled episode.
![]() I suspect the BBC hired extra staff to go to every school assembly and ask for a show of hands who watched EE and add the figures to the statistics

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amJEL0fFOaI I've really enjoyed the audition rounds on the American (S1) and Irish versions but I stopped watching from the battleground onwards as it just felt dull. However there is no doubting that the blind auction round makes for very good TV. My biggest fear about the UK version is the coaches. The suggestion is that there was good chemistry between them but as individuals they are not exactly the most likable panel. For me, Will I Am, Tom Jones and Jessie J are all rather irritating but obviously they will each have their supporters. |

Number two is hardly an issue, who wants to see Paul Merson in HD? And they happily simulcast Soccer AM on Sky One which is surely just as big a deal as Soccer Saturday, especially as it's not the exact same stuff you can see on the BBC at the same time.
But point 2 is also relevant: Soccer Saturday is a far more important programme than Soccer AM - wasn't it posted on here that Soccer Saturday had a peak audience of 1.4m. That's in a completely different league to Soccer AM. Soccer AM is lightweight, take it or leave it "general entertainment" - Soccer Saturday is far more of a programme that people take a conscious decision to watch. As for the HD, the value of HD on Soccer Saturday (and on SSN generally) is the graphics - recall the debate on here about when SSN changed their graphics to make them smaller which meant some people had trouble reading them in SD. If Sky didn't think having SSNHD exclusive was of value to them they would lower the price to what VM is willing to pay and let VM have it. |

Now I must admit I don't like TXF or BGT either but I thought from they hype that this would be different. It's not, just the same old pap but with revolving chairs. I can't see this being a hit at all. |

I hadn't realised Full Circle was up against Heartbeat. I thought it was a 9pm show. I seem to recall Full Circle not rating anything like as well as Around the World and Pole to Pole, or Himalaya and Sahara that followed, so that may be the reason.

However there is no doubting that the blind auction round makes for very good TV. I think it's been said they'll have 4 audition shows, then assuming the two Battle shows are on Saturdays the live shows would begin on 5th May. I would assume two top 20 shows, two top 16 shows and then a top 12, top 8 and the final 4 - so 7 live shows would take it to the 16th June. Actually we know BBC1 has a double header of Euro 2012 games on the 9th, so a final clash with BGT on the 2nd a possibility then, with shows on consecutive nights for rounds where two shows might be required. |

The 30th/31st August weekend marked the start of the new TV season (in the days when that meant something), so it was unfortunate timing that Diana died that Saturday night.
The episode of Heartbeat at the top of the list would have been the start of a new series, and ITV obviously decided not to ditch it, although I suspect the "Diana" documentary must have, contrary to my earlier recollection, replaced the planned 9pm drama after Heartbeat. The ITN News Special would have been around 6.30pm when her body was brought back to RAF Northolt alongside Prince Charles and met by Tony Blair etc. We won't have a rating for the BBC coverage of that because I believe they were still in full-on rolling news mode having been such since the early hours of Sunday morning; the ITN figure was inevitably boosted by folk settling down for the 7.30 Coro Street which I think may have been ditched. I have no recollection of The Beggar Bride, but it did very well for BBC1 in the last week of the summer school holidays. I found this link to the show - an all star cast clearly, but I am still none the wiser. I guess my memories of the last week of August 1997 are coloured by what happened in Paris on the 31st... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122395/ |

Strong performance by The Voice on NBC last night, despite entering the battle round stages. It had its best performance since the post-Superbowl Monday airing and way up on last weeks show. Quote:
Ratings: The Voice up to a 6.1, lifting Smash to a 2.7. Twitter: You will have a second season of Smash to love/kick around.
https://twitter.com/#!/TVMoJoeQuote:
Most expected NBC’s The Voice ratings to go down once the show moved from its popular audition phase into the battle rounds. Instead the numbers went up — and boosted Smash too. http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/03/06/th...battle-rounds/Aided by CBS running repeats last night, NBC’s Monday lineup of The Voice (16.7 million viewers, 6.1 adults 18-49 rating) and Smash (7.9 million, 2.7) posted gains over last week. Voice was up 13 percent and Smash climbed 17 percent. NBC is wisely ramping up Voice‘s star power for its battle rounds this year, adding Kelly Clarkson, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Jewel, Miranda Lambert, Alanis Morissette, Ne-Yo and Robin Thicke as guest coaches. The ratings climb was particularly helpful for 10 p.m.’s Smash, which fell drastically from its Super Bowl week premiere last month, then seemed to perk up slightly, and then last night showed some real spark. Smash was probably aided by repeats on other networks more than Voice, though, since both Castle and Hawaii Five-0 were encores in the hour. Still, nobody forces anybody to watch a TV show, and this was a great night for the Peacock. I would imagine with those numbers at 10pm ET and with it being NBC, Smash will almost certainly be back for a second series. |

Are we really expecting epic ratings for Coronation Street? I don't really follow it but i don't see this Frank character as anything special... My Mum, a big CS fan didn't really seem bothered about the storyline...

US Ratings Monday March 5
Against repeat competition NBC's Super Monday was up on last week. The Voice rose 13% on the Daytona impacted outing last week averaging a 6.1 across its two hours. That's also up a tenth vs. two weeks ago and a noticeable increase on the Battle Rounds last year where the numbers dropped significantly. Of course it also moved to an hour long slot at 10PM at this stage last year so that's not exactly apples to apples. Smash was up 17% against repeats at 10PM. That will have locked in its second season which was already pretty much set in stone. ABC's The Bachelor was down a tenth on last week with a two-hour average of 2.5. Over on Fox Alcatraz limped toward the finishing line with a two-hour double bill that was even with its last one hour original two weeks ago. The 8PM showing was up a tenth from that mark with a 1.9 though. Everything else was in repeats. ABC 8PM: The Bachelor – 2.3 [7.84] 9PM: The Bachelor – 2.7 [8.43] 10PM: Castle [r] – 1.4 [6.66] CBS 8PM: How I Met Your Mother [r] – 2.0 [6.17] 8:30PM: 2 Broke Girls [r] – 2.1 [7.01] 9PM: Two and a Half Men [r] – 2.1 [7.96] 9:30PM: Mike & Molly [r] – 1.8 [6.98] 10PM: Hawaii Five-0 [r] – 1.5 [6.55] Fox 8PM: Alcatraz – 1.9 [5.86] 9PM: Alcatraz – 1.8 [5.46] NBC 8PM: The Voice – 5.8 [16.32] 9PM: The Voice – 6.3 [17.00] 10PM: Smash – 2.7 [7.87] The CW 8PM: America's Next Top Model [r] – 0.5 [1.35] 9PM: Hart of Dixie [r] – 0.4 [1.07] |

Alcatraz is a goner, I imagine Touch will be renewed just because FOX needs something to fill Mondays and I can't see The Finder succeeding either.

The Finder is now unofficially cancelled. It'll finish its run on Friday and then I suspect never be seen from again. Unless it does surprisingly well on Friday which seems incredibly unlikely. As things stand the Fox schedule looks to be pretty much locked in for next season: Monday: Bones / New Drama Tuesday: Glee / New Girl / New Comedy Wednesday: The X Factor / Comedy Thursday: The X Factor / Touch (or New Drama) Friday: Unscripted Saturday: Cops / Repeats Sunday: Animation Domination |

In other ratings news out of the US AMC's The Walking Dead was Sunday's biggest show.
The Walking Dead – 3.5 [6.77] That's a tenth ahead of ABC's Once Upon A Time and a good six tenths against the other closest broadcast competition. It more than doubled the nearest competition on cable (Storage Wars with a 1.6). And that was just the original 9PM airing the 11PM repeat had a 0.8 in the demo and 1.47 million viewers. In other cable news Lifetime's Army Wives returned with a 1.2 in the demo a 3.63 million viewers. Showtime's Shameless had a 0.8 in the demo and Breakout Kings second season began with a respectable 0.8. |
