Louie has been a breath of fresh air, proving that you can judge performance/nice lines/danceablity (whatever it is you want to call it!) in a positive, encouraging way without resorting to bitch, catty remarks (surely one of the worst negative stereotypes that can be applied to a gay man - who'd want to 'live down' to that the way Jason did anyway?). A bit OTT he may be, both in expression and marks (and I was one of those dreading his arrival - how wrong I was!) but Louie offers constructive criticism, and always softens the blow of something not being right by pointing out something that was done well. His marks on Sunday, whilst a little over-enthusiastic, were at least all relative to each other so where's the harm?
Katarina also has been a lovely addition. She's polite, friendly but most importantly she was a world-class skater in her own right and has a keen eye for the details of skating - but she doesn't pick apart people's skills in a negative way, she's always trying to offer support and advice to make the next performance better. I struggle to understand why her detractors find anything wrong with the way she does things. Yes, she marked quite strictly on Sunday, but this is her first series and I'm betting she looked at the bare bones of the mark scheme for the skills test (i.e. two points per skill, the rest being for the overall performance) and applied that fairly to what she saw according to the letter of that guidance (which, surely, has been written by Robin as head judge - does anyone know for sure?).
Again, as with Louie, Katarina's marks were consistent relative to each other, so it made no difference to the overall leaderboard. We can argue that Andy was overmarked, but if he was that was the only anomaly - and anyway, just think how many other sports are marked on the subjective view of what the judge/referee sees (or doesn't see) at the time. They're human - it happens. It doesn't make them candidates for being sacked! And life isn't always fair - but guess what, we live with it!
Robin is always Robin - he's perfectly qualified to judge skating, and whilst we may not always agree with his marks or his comments, he is the glue that holds the judging panel together. I wonder if he's enjoying it all a bit more now - not only has Jason gone (I know they often agreed in principle, but I can't believe Robin really approved of Jason's acerbic approach to his comments) but he's no longer the lone skating judge surrounded by non-skating judges - he seems more relaxed to me this series, anyway.
So, to return to the OP's original proposal that the current panel need getting rid of, I'm afraid I (and nearly everyone else who's replied so far!) seem to disagree with you!”
