help in making homemade croutons
I know this should be the simplest thing in the world but I just cannot seem to master it.
Does anyone here have a tried and tested recipe that I can use at all? If it's any help, my usual bread tends to either be Polish bread or Hovis wholemeal breads. If anyone can post up some ways that they have made nice crispy croutons that I can try out (the recipes, not your actual croutons), I'd be grateful. ![]() thanks. |

I cut slicesof bread into cubes. Heat olive oil/butter in a pan. Throw the bread in (not too many at a time)
Toss them about every now and then till they're nicely coloured. You van add herbs like thyme, rosemary, oregano... seasalt, garlic and even parmesan cheese. |

- Very hot oil
- fry in batches i.e. don't overcrowd the pan = nice croutons

Thanks to you both. I will have a go at this method and let you know how I get on.

I could never get them right until I started doing them in the oven, sprayed with oil and with some grated peccorino or sea salt and then roasted until crunchy.

I would also recommend the slow oven method to cook them and dry them out.

I just cube some semi stale bread and dry fry in a pan until crispy.

I just buy them from Waitrose, they're only 99p for a bag full that lasts several bowls of soup

Semi stale bread and oven is my preferred way...find it gives a much less greasy crouton.
