I couldn't recommend encryption if you cant even copy a file OP.

I used to use TrueCrypt, but found the sequence of commands to open the "volume" a bit fiddly. And since I only accessed the files about a dozen times a year, I had plenty of time to forget how to do it.

So I moved to AxCrypt, and found it has a habit of hanging on to files after closing them. I now have the files duplicated on two memory sticks.

Does anyone have experience of file2file or DsCrypt? I can't find any reviews.

I have to agree. Learn the basics of file management, then how to make backups and only then move onto encryption.

Assign a shortcut to the volume and then it's just a matter of hitting the hotkey(s) and typing the password. It only takes a few seconds. You can also assign a hotkey to dismount all volumes. I've tried a few encryption packages over the years, but TC is by far my preferred choice. Once you get the hang of it, it's quick, easy and (so far) hasn't screwed up.

the only way would be re-code with reduced quality prior to encrypting.

Quite a few things could be said about that, but the main point is that anyone can see that you have secret stuff

if they are of dvd quality then you probably can re-encode them to a smaller filesize without losing quality but lets just say its going to cost alot of time to convert them from one video format and then when you want to reburn the files you'll have to extract the files and convert them back to mpeg-2 format and then burn them and for the less technically minded person it can be a minefield

By shortcut I assume you mean a desktop icon. If so, then surely the volume wouldn't exist until you'd opened TrueCrypt, pressed 'Select File', opened Windows Explorer and double-clicked on the filename corresponding to the dummy volume?

Or would double-clicking the icon take care of the preliminary steps? And I'm afraid I don't know what you mean by a "hotkey" in this context.

You can create a desktop shortcut to run Truecrypt and automatically mount your chosen volume. The shortcut needs the following command:

Code:
"C:\Program Files\TrueCrypt\TrueCrypt.exe" /v c:\path\filename /lx /a
Where x = the chosen drive letter (this is optional). More command options here. A hotkey can be added to the shortcut in the normal way. Or you can just double-click it.

To dismount, you can use the hotkey option on the Settings menu in Truecrypt.

Thanks Max99. I've made a note of this thread in case I go back to TrueCrypt. To be honest though, I'm not keen on hotkeys; there seem to be far too many as it is, and I keep finding them accidentally. Including, apparently, a DS one which sends you to the bottom of the page, and wipes out what you're posting.

I was always losing posts. Lazarus Form Recovery Add-on for Chrome, Safari and Firefox help keeps my stress levels down.

I find it quite annoying as I have a user account with a password so I though thats good, however I have noticed that ANY user even the guest user all the have to do to get into my account it go to Computer, users, my name and it says something like this user account is password protected and you can still press ok and it goes right into my account???

Anyone know how I can stop this please?

OK I have fixed that. Now I need to somehow only allow the administrator not the guests access to the D drive? Do you know how I would do that?

This is simpler than all that..............My Lockbox. I think it does what you originally wanted. I've used it for a while and find it comes in handy occasionally....

Lockbox pricing here http://fspro.net/purchase.html

It may be worth you paying the $19.95 (approx £13) for ease of use and piece of mind for Protected Folder

The web site says there's a free version which only allows one folder to be locked, and an option to upgrade to a payware "Pro" version which allows any number of folders to be locked.

Correction to the price of Proctected Folder it's £12.73 + £2.42 VAT

A Google search bring up various opinions of IObit so be careful what extras (toolbars etc) they might try to install
