If so, could you tell me if you absolutely have to use all three RF sockets in order to get Freeview reception on it?

Basically, I want to hook my analogue cable box up to one RF-In, and a standard aerial up to the other. This would then leave the RF-Out socket vacant. Will this be a problem?

Annoyingly, I've had different responses to this question from Sony pre-sales.

No. The output is only there if you wish to make use of it.

Really? Why couldn't Sony tell me this. They guy there seemed to think that you always had to make sure the RF-Out was hooked up to the second RF-IN - either using the loop-through cable supplied in the box or by looping in a VCR... which seems more than a little odd.

Have you had first hand experience with this TV set, Bobcar?

Actually I have to eat humble pie here as I've just checked the manual for a similar Sony TV and that definitely shows the loopthrough cable. It seems the 1st RF in only takes out the digital freeview, the RF is then transferred out (via a VCR if needed) back into the analogue stage. So not having the output fed in would mean no analogue channels. I guess they do it this way because if the 2 rf inputs had the same info on them there would be a clash so they ensure that analogue channels can only come from one source.

If your cable box has an RF in then include that in the loop. If not then you can use a splitter/combiner to combine the TV RF out and the cable RF out before going back into TV input 2. A suitable splitter is http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...dID=&doy=30m10 though there are many others available just do a search for "aerial splitter combiner".

think of the 1st rf in and out being a freeview box and the second input is the tv.
