i mean i dunno what to make of it all, everyone is so grateful these days, what happened to eschewing meaningless awards cos you knew they were industry bullshit?

is everyone scared they'll get a twitter backlash or something?

Twitter isn't as big a thing as you think in music still. Twitter has only really blown up in the past couple of years, and people were still being "polite" back in like 2008 when Twitter wasn't really relevent.

I'm glad they're polite. Especially since some of the awards were voted for by the public, it's rude to tell the public you don't value their opinions and their time taken to vote for you. I'm pleased artists are greatful for any acclaim they get.

I was just thinking the same thing. Everyone involved with the Brits was so boring and inoffensive.

Yeah, as strange as it may seem, I think artists nowadays are happy when they win awards.

There's probably the BRIT awards from the 70's uploaded on Youtube, so go and watch those and reminisce. Culture changes over time.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: we've all been beaten into submission by a culture of over-sensitivity. We can't say or do anything these days to rock the boat in case someone somewhere might be "offended" (oh, the horror).

So now we just put up and shut up and let everyone walk all over us and we're supposed to just lay there and say thank you while a boot stamps on our faces for ever.

Just once I would love the artist who wins Outstanding Contribution to read out a list of all the other acts who have been around for yonks and never been awarded it. Count 'em: Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple...

Watching a has been like Noel Gallagher strum his way around the same 4 chord's he's been using since 1995 was painful.

Blur's set was completely dire.They never were a particularly good live band even at their peak,but at least they could get away with it 15 years ago.

This is what the counter culture led to...Talentless clowns, charlatans and slappers. The counter-counter-culture people at least listened to people that had talent. Personally I like politeness combined with talent. Elvis and Hendrix were always polite in interviews on television.

If the albums are still selling and people are interested then why stop?.

The thing is the brits have always given awards to mainstream acts, they aren't going to complain about industry bullshit when they are industry bullshit.

I thought things might have changed when Arcade Fire won the double last year, (I'm a big fan, and I even I was shocked) But it seems its business as usual this year with 1D getting an award.

It may be industry bullshit, but you can't complain, come on its the brits, it would be like moaning a zebra has stripes.

So you'd be quite happy for a bland 'mum,dad,and even Gran loves us' band like Coldplay to churn out garbage year,after year,after year?

You would seriously happily go out and buy watered down crap by bands that havnt got the courage to admit that they are over the hill?

Bands are at their best when they are hungry,and when they have something to say.

That's what i think anyway.

I want to see a band come along that smashes the whole thing to pieces..and inspires kids to hate X-Factor.To inspire people out of this 'safe mode' that music has been chugging along on for the last 10 years.

'Beige' IS the new counter culture

To be honest MORish music has always dominated chart music.Even during the Punk & Grunge era's.

The main thing that that is different these days is that chart music dominates the music media for various reasons.The music landscape has drastically changed.Fewer Major labels who have a tighter grip & gone more commercial, the internet giving us too many choices (hard for success to be achieved from the underground GENUINELY) etc. etc.

Those type of artists still exist, they just don't get nominated for Brits, not that often, anyway. Most people didn't care about them, certainly not until after they'd been 'discovered' and made safe anyway.

I don't see the problem really, it's not as if there was ever a time when the charts (and award nominations) weren't full of the type of acts you see at the Brits now - those that mostly appeal to mainstream tastes.

It won't happen until the Major label's go bust / or their oligopoly is broken.

They may exist.But they aren't good enough to smash through from the underground and into the mainstream.

Back in the early 1990's,the corporate suits at MTV were forced to change their entire output because a counter culture had emerged that was too strong to ignore anymore.

The bores at the Brit awards were begging for bands like Nirvana,Pearl Jam,and Smashing Pumpkins to appear on their annual snore fest awards ceremonies (that had been drained by dinosaurs for the last 16 years.)

Same thing is needed now.

Part of the reason Adele is so successful is because people's expectations of talent have fallen so low.

The whole "originality" thing is what killed art and entertainment imo. It ultimately leads to cans of shit and unmade beds in galleries and people making music that sounds like a domestic in a kitchen. I'd like people to just go back to having standards. I actually think that's where the success of X Factor comes from. It's awful of course, but it's about the only chance people get to see/hear people singing songs with melodies and rhythm, albeit badly. The moment someone like an Adele comes along, look what happens... Does she rock the musical landscape? No, but that's what geniuses do, and you're lucky if you get one or two in a lifetime. Until then, let's have something that at least can be acknowledged as good.

One Direction aren't going to complain that they got an award are they? Not because they are "industry bulls***" like you want to believe, but it's because the public voted for them.

Their fans took the time to vote for them, so of course One Direction would be greatful for that.

If the acted "well hard" and "oh so rebellious" like those rock bands you used to like, they'd be insulting their fans, not the BRIT awards.

This is exactly why I cannot get into Adele. I find her bland, boring and her music sends me to sleep every time I hear it. It's the kind of music mums get into because she's the same size as they are and doesn't make apologies for it.

I remember Siouxsie Sioux coming onstage to collect her "Lifetime Achievement" award from Chris Evans afew years ago, (That in itself was a headf*ck!).

I was really happy for her (and The Banshees in a way)to finally be recognised for their contributition to music, but, sandwiched between acts & Evans doofus mentality, it was too little too late.

No wonder she did what every real star should do - treat it like the joke it is and got totally pissed before her slurred speech.

Whats so hilarious, are artists that thank not just Mum & their manager, but the whole media circus that got them there. Im sure they'll be thanking Macdonalds,Tescos & their financial advisors next.:sleep::sleep::sleep::yawn::yawn:
