I know. She broke Whitney's record at number one in the USA but hasn't sold nearly as much as her. She was at number one for months, but her sales were nothing special in history. They probably will be by the time this album is over.

Actually I hadn't realised BIA had sold 30 million which is the same as the Immaculate Collection by Madonna!”

And what's your point?

Are you saying sales equals talent?

Are you a big fan of The Spice Girls? Boyzone? Cliff Richard?

Don't come out with that old 'they sold loads of records so they must be good' chestnut.

She sang like a cow in labour tonight... admit it.

I didn't watch it so I wouldn't know.

She's done great live performances elsewhere though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2NiGsZUvuA

I bought RITD as a download but haven't got any of her albums.

And yet you feel free to comment on other people's opinions on her performance tonight despite admitting not having watched it yourself?!

So funny!!

The thread title is asking whether she's over hyped as opposed to 'what did you think of tonight's performance on the Brits'. The OP makes absolutely no mention whatsoever of the Brits in their post.

I chose to respond to that question as opposed to acting like a lobotomised Gibbon on crack. My apologies for actually reading the thread title and opening post and engaging my brain before typing.

I should have known better with this being DS in the year 2012.

Adele's simply been extraordinary lucky being in the right place at the right time. She's not much more than a little above average pop singer who sings rather bland, but easy-to-listen-to tunes that appeal to the masses who care little about music anyway. In that sense she's a bit like a female Elton John of today who also wrote a lot of bland stuff and occasionally some classics came from him too. But at least he had an undoubted talent as a keyboard player. And he was also smart and knew how to play the publicity game which is what mainly kept him going through all the dross that he put out..

Rolling In The Deep

Hometown Glory

That's about it for me.

I do like her voice though, a lot more than Duffy or Dido anyway. I'd like to see her do more up tempo stuff as her albums sound pretty depressing.

Gaga has more strong tunes so far in my opinion and she also has an excellent voice.

I'd be surprised if either Adele or Gaga are selling millions of albums in 5 years though.

I must of watched a different award show to everyone tonight, her vocal was flawless. I watched with 6 housemates who all felt the same and they aren't even that big Adele fans like me.
She is a down to earth star, with a top quality voice, great song writing abilities, and timing was perfect.

To the poster saying she can't sing live, um lol is all.

The thing with Adele is she isn't relying on anything other than the voice. She doesn't need fancy videos, she doesn't need to come out with a cock in her head or a dress made of pubic hair ala Gaga because she does what's needed. She sings. She's a singer, and it's about tiem singers get the recognition they deserve.

The hype is because she's so popular and has sold so much. That in turn results in becoming more popular and selling more. It's not the first time this has happened. Adele's songs may well not be the "best you've ever heard" OP, isn't that a great reason why music is so subjective? IMO Adele has done so well because she sings from the heart, she's being true to who she is, she's got soul and a beautiful voice whether it's the best one you've ever heard or not. People like her warm, attractive personality and her ability to touch you when she sings. THAT is why there's hype and i am pleased about it. Give me a singer like Adele over the likes of Rihanna who rely on sex to sell, people like Gaga who need to act wacky to get attention and the likes of Cheryl Cole who can't even sing.

Proper singer. Normal girl. Beautiful voice.

What exactly is people's problem? Or do they just hate seeing someone being so successful that they hate them and try to bring them down at any opportunity? It's a bit weird.

Part of Adele's success, from a mainstream perspective is that she's doing something different at the moment.

When kids turn on Capital or Radio 1 usually, they heard crummy generic dance music from Taio Cruz, Flo Rida, Lady Gaga, LMFAO, Pitbill, etc. And then suddenly Adele is getting played on there. She just sounds so DIFFERENT to those kids, and it's really refreshing to them I guess.

Truth is, there's hundreds of artists out there that do similar music to Adele, but most people haven't found out about them. But whichever artist it is, it's nice to hear something non-electro on the mainstream radio stations now.

I have to say im not 'getting' the hype

Her songs are good but they are by no means the best songs iv ever heard

Her voice is good but shes by no means the best vocalist ive ever heard

She is a good enough artist but in my opinion she is NOWERE NEAR the level to warant such hype!

Its BEYOND hype now its almost a phenomenon how popular her album is

My question to the forum is WHAT IS ADELES APPEAL

WHY Is she considered the best artist in the world right now”

Calm down dear, noone says she is the best artist. She is the best SELLING artist. Slightly different

Welcome to Britain 2012. Hilarious thread, btw. And some truly terrible maths evidenced in post 21.

First of all people need to know what the word Hype means

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hype

Couldn't be arsed to type it out so attached a link.

Now in my opinion Adele has never been hyped unlike many many other acts, all that happened was millions of people bought her records............that is not hype.

I don't remember massive add campaigns like say Coldplay or similar names.

Just my view

Are you sure? Can I see your workings out? Here's mine:

Worldwide sales:

ADELE - 21 - 20 million in 1 year.

DIRE STRAITS - Brothers In Arms - 30 million in 26 years.

PS In the UK, '21' will overtake the sales of Brothers In Arms' by the middle of March at the latest (it may even be by the end of February).

she relates to a large audience, people of all ages like her. that can be rare these days, usually these young performers only relate to the kids. I think she is ok but not a major fan but I can see why she is hyped, amazing voice, i dont see how that can be disputed

i agree, it's not been hype, it's been word of mouth and gradual realisation. Hype comes before the event not after. 21 wasn't hyped it took us all by surprise, Adele included, and took off on it's own merit.

I've never heard any of her stuff.
I know her album is called "21" and that's about it.
I don't listen to music radio these days and am quite happy listening to music mainly from the 70's to the 90's.

Spot on. She's just getting praise and credit for doing so well. 21 has just sold 730,000 copies in one week in America, a year after it was released. That's utter madness! And that's why she's getting so much praise.
