Whats different about the value products that make them so much cheaper?

For example Kellogs Cornflakes, i like. Tesco home brand Cornflakes taste the same to me, so i like them, but the value ones just do not taste the same.

Same goes for the wheetabix type products, Branded and Home brand taste the same but value are just not nice.

Been eating some Asda smart price 35p chocolate tonight and while i can eat it, its not enjoyable, so what makes it different from say just normal asda chocolate?

Less nutrition, and more cheap ingredients, leading to empty carbs to bulk up the weight. With your chocolate as an example, they'll be a really low cocoa content. If it were sausages it would be all the cheapest cuts and loads of rusk, so less meat aswell.

Not sure to be honest, I usually don't notice too much of a difference. One thing I can't get is value tinned tomatoes, the juice is sooooo runny like water and not thick and yummy.

My mother loves the Sainsburys basics chilled Macaroni Cheese and she's a fussy one for value products.

Some of them are fine, it just depends on what it is. Tesco value tea bags are disgusting, but their orange juice is ok.

I actually don't mind the tinned chopped tomatoes, they are always fine so long as you cook them for long enough.

Value products are definitely hit and miss....some are fine and others are horrible. I guess it's all about just trying them and seeing what you can "get away with"....although I'd never buy value meat. That said, I generally find the own brand stuff much better quality than the value ranges.

Some of your value stuff literally will be the exact same product, just in different packaging. That's how a lot of these companies work.

certain things it is worth paying extra for but others as another poster said they are exactly the same just different packaging. I saw ap romgramem on this about 2 years ago and the way supermarkets lay out things, how they package things influence how we buy.

I don't mind value chopped tomatoes and kidney beans but that's about it. I definitely wouldn't have the meat though, had to get some once as they were out of regular and it was horrible and fatty.

One of the most ridiculous price differences though is the difference between own brand dried herbs and spices and the Schwarz ones, I've actually seen some items at almost 4 times the price. Surely that's exactly the same stuff.

Schwarz and even supermarket own brand herbs and spices are horrendously overpriced. In my local Sainsbury's in the World Foods bit hidden at the back you can buy big bags of herbs and spaces for less than they sell the little jars for in he more accessible aisle.

It's all about the Asian supermarkets for spices for me. If you get some little jars (or reuse the overpriced supermarket/schwartz ones) then you can save a fortune.

We use a large variety of value foods some are great and the ones that aren't we stop buying. Sometimes it's a question of getting used to the taste though, as value foods seem to be more like brands from the past with more salt and sugar etc.

I don't mind Sainsbury's Basics range for things like biscuits or veg. I don't think Tesco Value is as good as Sainsbury's Basics for some reason. I rarely buy any "big-name" products unless on a really good offer. I stick to the store's own brand range but will buy value for household items or some foods I'm not too fussed about. I'm not at all keen on value meat though.

With you on this, although value broccoli isn't too bad for soups and baking in a cheesy veg bake.
It is hit & miss tho' - I don't go for the cleaning products either - I love my Aeriel, Lenor, Zoflora, toilet rolls etc.
I do prefer the better quality tinned toms but you can get away with cheaper ones in certain dishes like spag bol if you're adding herbs and olive paste etc before simmering.
I have noticed that tinned toms, ketchup, eggs, bread, tuna to name but a few essentials are so expensive!
Eggs look like they're laid by bantoms unless you buy the extra large at approx £2.25-ish for 6!

I remember it being on the news a few years ago that there had been contamination in a Patak's factory and amongst the affected items were supermarket own brand stuff.

Completely agree. My wife does use the broccoli for soups, as well as the bag of Tesco "Market Value" parsnips for her curried parsnip soup....they do the job just fine.

You'd be surprised (or maybe you wouldn't) at how many branded products are made in the exact same place using the exact same recipe as own brands. After all, there's only so many curry paste (for example) factories that the UK needs, why would Tesco/Sainsbury's/Asda/Morrisons build their own when they can hire a company who already make it to make theirs too. The same applies to electronics....a lot of the branded stuff is made in exactly the same way by the same people who make the "cheaper" brands...maybe using slightly cheaper components when applicable (same as ingredients in food I guess).

Yes, my friend used to work for 'walkers' and M&S had their section of the factory for their crisps.

Yup...doesn't surprise me. I work in the technology industry and my current role involves liaising with manufacturers all over the world (I say all over...mainly SE Asia) who manufacture our kit but brand it with our logos, software, etc. They do the same for our rivals. It's a strange situation, to be honest, in that they are essentially the manufacturers of competing products....but I guess they don't care as long as they get paid.

Anyway...I digress

I know where you're coming from - my eldest son works/programmes/sells media/software products all over the world and they're all from one base - its hard to believe any hype out there these days and know what you're paying over the odds for - don't start me on cosmetics!
My daughter is a manager for Tesco as is the rest of her fiance's family even down to pharmaceuticals - which leads me on to people paying for brand medicinal names such as an anti-inflammatory begining with 'N' it's the same as a 30p non branded ibuprofen. Like you I could digress...
