Nowadays you don't see much Rock on the billboard at all (that will change though as it goes in cycles) in fact strangely a lot of the rock bands do better over here than the States at least initially. All the big billboard rock acts of recent years have been just as big over here. Blink 182, Green Day, Sum 41, the Nu Metal Stuff, Foo Fighters etc etc.

Rock music is bigger in the UK than it appears to be. I'd never have guessed, just following popular culture.

Yeah they were a very big band and very successful in the UK between 87-96, but there not a big band anymore. They might raise some interest with the nostalgia effect but there isnt many folks who are bothered about new music from them nowadays.
Also, they did have 3 or 4 number one albums but to my knowledge they didnt have a number 1 single in the UK. Might be wrong.
One thing we do have to say - Rock bands actually play "live" and some of them eg KISS,Motley Crue still put on a hell of a show even in 2012.
Dance artists don't have massive fan bases and most modern pop artists cant cut it live..therefore rock music has become "the live event" in the modern era.
The 70s and 80s rockers are cleaning up as dad revisits his youth and shows the kids what it was all about..
Sadly the better 80s rock bands were deemed uncool as the grunge movement started in the early/mid 90s.
We will never know what would have happened if Guns n Roses had continued releasing albums in the 90s because of the break up and madness of Axl Rose

The UK has always punched way above its weight with Rock music in particular, as others have said there is more of it in the US because of the sheer size of the country and its population, but compared to classic and even modern Rock acts, as a percentage they must fall short of the UK, many of their bands are poor imitations of our classic rock bands anyway

It's not so simplistic as that.America is very much split into regional media areas.Artists have to break through a few of those regional areas before they can make it through to national level.Each area has different emphasis on different types of music.Overall you're right though, there is much more diversity.
There are quite a few rock radio stations in the UK but they tend to be internet or dab stations which do not get high listener levels at all.To my ears the quality of rock music output on all stations in the UK is not very high (generally) as well.Radio output in the UK is very commercially (mainly Major label) driven, including rock music., apart from BBC introducing, Amazing Radio + few other internet radio stations.The UK media just doesn't seem have the know how or inclination to promote rock music unlike alot of other countries i.e. Germany, America.It's not that is no demand for it.The UK media just doesn't seem to understand the rock audience & generally is not interested apart from the pop-rock end which isn't doing that well anyway, apart from Coldplay etc. (the very poppy end of rock).

Sales of recorded music are very low in the US.Generally, the US media is not so obsessed with chart music or current music though.If it's good & it is seen to have an audience the US media is much more accomodating to give it a platform.The UK media seems to have the opinion if you haven't got a current charting album / single you are seen as being unpopular, apart from Britpop bands (or a few associated genre bands) perhaps.
Rock 'n' Roll originated in the USA and its variance's nearly always too come from there. Metal, Acid... all of American origin.

Despite Tenacious D being a comedy band, 'The Metal' is totally true - Jack Black just lists off some of the genres that have come and gone which would supposedly kill 'The Metal'. Grunge, New Wave, Punk-Rock, Techno, etc. But they've all come and gone.
Grunge can never make a comeback because we don't need it now as much as we did need it in the late 80's early 90 and mide 90's ,becuase music was starved from something like it.Plus kids were more angry and pissed back in that time frame.It ripped and hole in culture and the music scene and it was right time for it.Thought I would like too see it back but it will never happen just another P.O.M,Nickleback water down crap.And band's like PABH and Violent Solo along with Japanesse Voyager can't ever be grunge becuase after the get labled grunge they can't make any movement making them,a Nirvana and Hole wannabes.It the same way Little Mix and The Wanted can never be Take That or The Spice Girls the same way Stell Panther can never be the new GNR Or AC/DC.

You could apply exactly the same to bands like 3 Doors Down, Black Stone Cherry, Matchbox 20, etc. They all produce very radio-friendly songs but are more-or-less completely ignored outside of the likes of Planet Rock.

Don't wan't sound bias but Rock music was fading out around late 99 and early 2001.
There is not many youngster getting in to rock music nowadays it's mostly Rap/RNB and Dubstep.
It all started too happen in the late 90's after MTV ditched it shows like Heabandgers ball and MTV raw 120, Alternative nation.for the Grind and show more based at Hip Hop and RNB and opening the way for the music you hear now.And people like Britney Spears and Eminem,There was Nu Metal and Rap Metal but it was nowhere near as good as the Rock music in the late 80's or early mide 90's.And Radio media got bored of it and then the X Factor came and it wen't down hill from there with Take That and Spice Girl wannbes.Or people trying too be the next lad rock style Oasis and Blur band that overrated kind of were still brits and can rock out loud.They did take it back for awhile with the Hives but it soon fade out again,The Strokes just play that one bassline note and guitar riff in way too copy The Ramones and it was awful.That DOO DA DDO DA and the song tune and lyrics to the song were pant's.And it seem kid are just not wowed by Rock music anymore it all wen't south after that they still love the Foo Fighters and that it's cuase they are still relvent and play good music.I Don't think there will be another good band like Guns and Roses or Nirvana again like there were in the old days when Radio and MTV played rock music too the masses.
