I have broadband infinity and have received a BT Vision offer.

A free BT Vision+ box and it will cost me £4 a month.

I know nothing of BT Vision as I have Sky+ but might consider this for another room.

It says in the small print - Excludes HD channels.

Is it worth taking up the offer or are they going to palm me off with a box that will be obsolete soon or something?

In general - is BT Vision+ reliable?

The cheapest well-reviewed HDD recorder I can find is a version of the Humax made for John Lewis, at £208. That's the equivalent of just over four years payments for Vision+. Not to mention:

1. If it goes wrong, it's down to BT to repair it.

2. You also get catch-up TV.

I've just switched from virginmedia to BT, and I'm happy with it.

just a bit concerned about it having to be connected to broadband all the time. If I use it as a freeview recorder and have a load of programmes scheduled to record while I am away - if the broadband goes down - will the programmes not record?

The programmes will still record, but if your broadband goes down then the epg will not update and so if the time of any of the programmes change, then it may record the wrong thing. I've had BT vision for 3 years and I think you worry too much!

Don't waste your money. You have Sky+ so you can record all you need on that. Vision will give you nothing that you haven't had the opportunity to watch on Sky many, many times over. Sure, they're 'giving it away' at only £4 per month to attract a certain demographic, but you have Sky+, what does it offer you? Nothing...

£4 per month versus how much for Sky + ??

Right now Sky is the answer for Sports but thats changing, they already lost the Film battle to LoveFilm.

But I'd stick on Sky until the Youview compatible BTVision box comes out then tell Sky where they can stick it.

I watch loads (too much) TV and my Sky+ box is easily filled to its limit so it's a way of getting some more space to record stuff when I go away on holiday.

I could just buy a freeview recorder but I like the idea of being able to watch i-player on my TV and as some-one above mentions - it works out cheaper than buying a freeview PVR.

I like Sky and will keep it anyway.

To each his own, but most of those Freeview recorders will also allow you to watch iPlayer on your TV. Also a Sky multiroom subscription will not cost much more and will provide you with much, much more contemporary content to choose from.

Digital stream PVR £199 from JL, HD as well, works well.

but i agree for £4 a month the BT vision box is pretty good value, if you using Bt broadband already and got the bandwidth to use it, which with fibre there would be.

But Bt vision don't have a HD tuner, so no HD channels.

I have been holding off getting the BT Vision service with the basic package for a good while now as the Vision box still cant pick up the 4 Freeview HD channels.
If the box could pick up the Freeview HD channels then I would think about getting BT Vision with the basic package.

Just a thought what dose the basic BT Vision package offer. For as I said above thats what I would get if BT Vision also could get the Freeview HD channels.

Just to add that BBC iPlayer (and the full ITV Player) are coming to Sky Anytime+ in a few months time.
