For the past week you have been voting and now it's time to reveal the results of the Home and Away Favourite Character Competition 2012
![]() Last year, Morag came first, but now that she has left Summer Bay it means that there will be a new winner this year! Here are the characters in the top 5, whose final positions remain unknown. In alphabetical order they are: Alf Stewart Darryl "Brax" Braxton Dexter Walker Irene Roberts Marilyn Chambers The top 5 are close, and I look forward to revealing the results to you! The 28 characters from this year's competition will be posted 1 by 1 with a bit of commentary until we find out who has won this year's competition. While we countdown the characters, please feel free to write your reactions down and your predictions on who you think will win this year's competition. Unfortunately I won't be able to start the countdown until tomorrow afternoon but I have launched the Results Thread anyway so that people can begin discussing predictions

Hey everyone, I am so sorry that I haven't been able to start the results countdown until now. To cut a long story short, I have been using my mum's laptop for the past week or so because mine was having repairs, and the document with all the results on was on my broken laptop so I was just waiting to get it repaired. I thought I'd told you guys all this on this thread but obviously not, so I'm so sorry!
I will now start the countdown

28 (NE) = Harvey Ryan = 19.0% (Round 1)
Kicking off our countdown is guest character Harvey whose main storylines have involved his on-going feud with Romeo and Alf, as well as his relationship with Roo. I think he was mainly brought into the show as a plot device for Roo but to be honest I can’t see a reconciliation between the two of them in the future and so, when Marcus Graham’s contract expires later this year, I expect it won’t be renewed. The only thing I like about his character is that it gives underused Roo more screentime.

27 (NE) = Stu Henderson = 23.0% (Round 1)
Stu’s main storyline has been his abusive relationship with fellow newcomer Sasha. I thought Home and Away did a good job with the storyline, especially because it’s given more depth to Sasha’s character. Stu will soon meet a sticky end but the culprit responsible won’t be revealed for some time. I thought Stu was an interesting character, but in my opinion he was played by a poor actor.

26 (27) = VJ Patterson = 23.3% (Round 1)
As a child guest actor, VJ doesn’t get much screen time but I expect he will have more exposure on the show as the actor ages. In the past year he has witnessed his mum Leah’s turbulent love life with Elijah and Miles, and he was sad to see the latter leave Summer Bay recently. I realise VJ is young, but I think he should get a storyline of his own so his character can develop, instead of just being part of Leah’s storylines.

25 (NE) = Mink Smith = 30.6% (Round 1)
Mink is the stroppy and rebellious sister of Romeo who first appeared in early 2010 for a few weeks before recently returning for a further guest stint. I’ve much preferred her second stint on the show and liked her scenes with Indi in particular. Mink is the highest placed guest character in this year’s competition and I do actually think, like Morag, she should be promoted to a regular cast member.

24 (20) = Elijah Johnson = 33.3% (Round 1)
Elijah has had a tough year adapting to the relationship between his best friend Miles and ex-girlfriend Leah. He is this year’s lowest placed regular character, which is a shame because I actually quite like Elijah and think the writers have missed a trick with his character. Elijah had potential and I’m sad to see that he will be leaving the show, but I imagine that most of you guys will actually be happy about this.

23 (25) = April Scott = 41.3% (Round 1)
2011 saw April have relationship drama with Xavier and Dexter, and she has recently become attached to Heath, much to the disapproval of sister Bianca. I personally think April is a dreadful, utterly dislikeable character, especially following her break-up with Dex. She is my worst character in the show, played by an average actress, so I’m not surprised with this placing at all. I welcome comments from people who completely disagree.

22 (24) = Casey Braxton = 42.1% (Round 1)
Casey has been in the show for little over a year but him and his brothers have already had plenty of drama. In 2011 we witnessed Casey’s relationship with Ruby, his anger issues, his act of arson and his subsequent sentence to juvenile detention. When he first came to Summer Bay, a lot of you thought Casey might become the show's first regular gay character, but this wasn't to be. Casey’s low position not only shows he is the least popular of “The River Boys” but also that he isn’t really loved by much of you. He is currently harbouring a massive secret from his time in detention and I really hope the secret is worth the much anticipated wait.

21 (21) = Ruby Buckton = 49.5% (Round 1)
Ruby is a character who I’ve always liked and I’ve never really understood why she isn’t more popular with other viewers. She’s an interesting character and Rebecca Breeds is one of the show’s best young actors. The recent scenes of Ruby’s reaction to her mother Charlie’s death were very well acted. I wasn’t a big fan of her pairing with Casey but I’ve always liked Ruby’s scenes with Charlie, Liam and currently Leah. I really hope Ruby remains in the show because her past storylines including her alcoholism have made quite gripping viewing.

20 (16) = Roo Stewart = 50.3% (Round 1)
Although played by a different actress, Roo is another one of Home and Away’s early characters brought back to Summer Bay by Cameron Welsh (along with other characters such as Marilyn Chambers, Will Smith and Gypsy Smith). I think quite a lot of fans are slightly disappointed with Roo’s return, as her low placing proves, because I was hoping for more of the “energy” Welsh promised Roo would bring to the show. I didn’t really like Roo’s pairing with Harvey but I hope in the future Roo can have a long-term relationship with Sid because I think the two characters work well with each other.

19 (26) = Gina Austin = 52.4% (Round 1)
Gina has seen a significant increase in popularity this year and I think this is because the writers have explored her character more, as her mother-son relationship with Xavier and romantic relationship with John have received more screen time. I think Gina is possibly the most underrated character in the show. I think Sonia Todd is a great, diverse actress able to act out drama and comedy equally well. I initially found her character really boring in 2009 and 2010 but I do think she should stick around now.

18 (NE) = Sasha Bezmel = 53.3% (Round 1)
Sasha is this year’s highest placed newcomer. I think she’s done pretty well considering she’s only been in the show for just over half a year. I’m glad that Home and Away have introduced a naturally rebellious teenager like Sasha because we’ve not really seen anyone quite like her since Nicole’s arrival in Summer Bay in 2008. I thought Demi Harman played Sasha’s abusive relationship with Stu pretty well and I’m interested to see which direction the writers will take her following Stu’s upcoming death.

17 (22) = Xavier Austin = 54.4% (Round 1)
Improving on last year’s placing is Xavier, whose 2011 storylines have mainly involved his romances with April, Kelly and his growing feelings for Sasha. I don’t think I have ever seen a soap character have quite so many relationships as Xavier has had since he arrived in Summer Bay in late 2008. I kind of hope the writers can develop his character a bit more so it’s not just Xavier’s love life we see. Nevertheless, like his mother Gina, Xavier has still managed to make a substantial climb from last year's placing.

16 (15) = Liam Murphy = 61.2% (Round 1)
Liam has had quite a year, being sacked from his teaching job by Gina, his stint in rehab following his drug addiction relapse, his rivalry with Heath and finally being involved in a car accident which had massive implications on his on-off relationship with Bianca. I actually really like Liam’s pairing with Bianca and have always enjoyed scenes the two share, and I do hope their upcoming marriage lasts, but then again, I think that might be asking too much from a soap.

There were few surprises here. I am surprised that Roo ranked as long as she did (certainly I thought she would be more popular than Sid). You are right about April - putting her with Dex was the best thing they did for her character but after the break up, she has become insufferable. It's interesting that other than Dexter, Indi and Romeo - all the teenagers and young adults fared quite badly.
