Autobiographical artists?
Which artists use lyrics to demonstrate their story?
ones I have noticed/am fans of are: Adele, is the obvious one for autobiographical lyrics. Lily Allen, I love the way how she is so up front about sexual experiences. Kate Nash, I love her entire first album! |

Rufus Wainwright is a big one for this. His music isn't for everyone but if you can get into him, his songs give a lot of himself.

Amy Winehouse was painfully honest at times. ''You Know I'm No Good'' is an example of this.
It's my favourite Amy song, but talk about over-sharing. ![]() All of her music was autobiographical. |

Oasis... especially the song C&A, reached out to everyone that was pretty much on the dole.
------ "Is it my imagination Or have I finally found something worth living for? I was looking for some action But all I found was cigarettes and alcohol You could wait for a lifetime To spend your days in the sunshine You might as well do the white line Cos when it comes on top . . . You gotta make it happen! Is it worth the aggravation To find yourself a job when there's nothing worth working for? It's a crazy situation But all I need are cigarettes and alcohol! You could wait for a lifetime To spend your days in the sunshine You might as well do the white line Cos when it comes on top . . . You gotta make it happen!" |

Joni Mitchells - Blue
Possibly the most open autobiographical album of all time, and changed so many artists thoughts. |

Possibly the most open autobiographical album of all time, and changed so many artists thoughts. Peter Green. Nobody knew how autobiographical his later heartfelt lyrics were until his mental decline into Schizophenia. Seasick Steve

Suzanne Vega, Tori Amos, Ian McNabb, Runrig, Capercaillie, Janis Ian, Bob Dylan, Tracy Chapman, the late Syd Barrett, off the top of my head. There's loads, it does depend on what exactly you mean by autobiographical though.
I would think most recording artists who are singer/songwriters are influenced by their own life experiences. |

I'd second that. He has such a tragic yet compelling life to sing about too.

Sixx: AM
Fronted by Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue, they've only released two albums but the first one in particular is an accompaniment to Nikki's book "The Heroin Diaries". A remarkable examination of the life of a heroin addict. |

Especially her Misunderstood and Funhouse albums which detail her childhood and her almost divorce breakup from her Husband. |
