Are Mariah and Celine as iconic as Whitney was?
So for years, these 3 have been the 'vocal trinity'. The 3 females most regarded as the best in the business.
Whitney's passing has seen alot of people call her 'the greatest female singer ever'. Where do Mariah and Celine fit in, in terms of success and popularity. In terms of sales, Celine is the leader with Mariah second, then Whitney last. Hardly a surprise when Whitney released the fewest albums. In terms of popularity, Whitney was probably the top. What do you think? |

Whitney was/is 'the voice' she'll always be the inspiration of the talent show rejects etc etc
Celine Dion is only really widely known here for the Titanic song, so no. Mariah is only really iconic because of Hero. |

I think female artists like Debbie Harry, Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks, Patty Smith, Madonna etc. are far more important/iconic than any of the women mentioned in this thread and have influenced far more artists over the years... They all have distinctive, mostly strong and unique voices that aren't just screaming and hitting stupid notes.
I would never label Mariah or Celine as "the best in the business", Whitney maybe but not the best. I guess there's no way of actually knowing though because it's all down to personal opinion. |

Mariah is the best
Because she actually writes 90% of her stuff and also produces and she has so many classic tracks |

Definitely yes in terms of sale sand impact in the 90's definitely Mariah has the most US number 1 singles tied with the beatles (18 0r 19) and most for a female she has had two of the worlds biggest selling albums and is widely regarded as one of the best singers of her genre.
Same with Celine massive sales big impact and a wideley regarded voice. They may not be as big as their earlier careers but nor was Whitney and both are still releasing so i would say yes. Outside of the big not hitting wailing genre there ar far better if not gifted singers who are more influential and creative than either of those three for me great singers/iconic artiists would be: Dusty Amy Winehouse Sarah Mclachlan Annie Lennox Kate Bush Janis Joplin Etc |

All them artists u mentioned aren't iconic except for Madonna!! Maybe blondie but other than that no!! Madonna, janet, Whitney, Mariah, celine, Britney and beyonce are the ones who are more Important/iconic that will be remembered
Britney, Whitney, mariah have along the way been nothing more than products Jnet and Madonna are as artistic as the mainstream gets i can assure you someone like Kate Bush will have a longer lasting legacy |

tbh i see very little iconography with mariah, whitney nor celine. they are just rather visually unimposing but successful females. |

Leanne Rimes - people forget her but she is one of the most talented voices in the music world. She can do rock, country, and ballads to perfection.

Fans, longevity and critical acclaim are the main things that determine an Icon.

to start with...non of them are icons, an icon is religious symbol!
you mean cultural icon... this discription highlights why these divas are not cultural icons, or at least are a very long way down the pecking order http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_icon |
