....Tears For Fears, Bucks Fizz, Dollar

All these early - mid 80's acts and more have never received credit for their contribution to 80's pop....not even in an ironic manner - despite having numerous big hits.

Doctor Doctor, Shout, New Song, Wouldn't It Be Good, If yOu Can't Stand The Heat, Mad World, Head Over Heels, You Take Me Up, Mirror Mirror, Mothers Talk, Like To Get To Know You Well, What Is Love, Dancing Girls, Sister Of Mercy, Land of Make Believe..............
.I could go on - not even mentioning the great 80's albums Nik's Human Racing (my re-issue on it's way - out Monday), T4F Songs From The Big Chair, The Fizz - Are You Ready, Thomson Twins - Into The Gap, Howard Jones - Human's Lib,

There was some great 80's UK music, it really hightlights just how shocking UK music has now become.

I could talk about 80s music all day.
Over the last few years I've tried to get hold of and compile the biggest most complete collection of 80s top 40 hits.

It's amazing how many acts 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc singles are just as good as the big first hit but are forgotten by most radio stations etc.

Agreed on the 1st three, Tears For Fears had only one great album and ARE recognised imo. Bucks Fizz and Dollar are too kitsch for my taste and the former often get mentioned.

Quite right - I find that a lot of the less major hits by 80s acts are often superior to their greatest successes. I actually last heard 'Round and Round' by Spandau Ballet, one of their many overlooked hits, in of all places a pizza restaurant. I can't say I've heard it on any radio station in years.

I have to cite the excellent 'Like to Get to Know you Well' by Howard Jones as a prime example of a fifth top 40 single being just as good as his first and second big hits, 'New Song,' and 'What is Love.' I was very lucky to see Howard Jones perform a few years ago at one of the 80s reunion gigs and his set was excellent.

Tears for Fears and Thompson Twins are definitely underrated. I think you can safely say they experimented with their respective sounds and didn't just produce endless variations on the same theme.

That's the problem with 80's radio and video channels. They always seem to play the big one that EVERYONE knows - as if they're scared people might *gasp* switch off if it isn't 100% recognisable

That's kinda what i was getting at in my post. There's so many "forgotten" 80s songs that are never aired.
We have a radio station in my area that prides itself on playing "songs you dont hear anywhere else" and it's true. For a commercial radio channel it's really good.

I love many of the 80's classics such as Karma Chameleon, Take On Me, Don't You Want Me etc but there's so much more to the 80's than all those.

I'm still actively seeking out and buying 80s 7" singles - turned up some real gems, plus songs I missed first time around.

Nik Kershaw, Thompson Twins, Howard Jones....3 of my fave pop acts ever.

Nik Kershaw was extremely underrated, taken only for his pop singles, but his albums were exceptional and his political leanings favourable.

I listen to him almost daily.

Me too. I had into the gap which I played to death. Apart from Bucks Fizz who were awful I like all the bands/artists listed above. I'm starting to sound like my parents when I say pop was so much better in the 80's.

There is still good music out there. Why can't people praise the past without slagging off the present?

The 'deluxe' cds of Thompson Twins - Into The Gap & Quick Step, Side Kick, feature the 12" mixes of the singles and prove that they were never given their dues, their synth work & the mix of ethnic percussion defo gave them their own sound. I still play them along with the 'cooler' stuff in my collection. Ditto Dollar, Trevor Horn at his best! Listen to VideoTheque now - its timeless. I have to draw the line at Jones & Kershaw though!

Howard Jones is brilliant. Probably prefer Nick Heyward to Kershaw tho. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4v55R1qy68

I feel The Human League have respect - most early 80's electro outfits were/are cool today.

ditto on that, its the mid-80s onwards, where things started to go pear-shaped.

Those that like the 80's should dip into other European acts, ie Modern Talking , yep Brother Louie was terrible, but their first album is AMAZING, as are most of their other singles. Other gr8 acts from the early 80's include Vivien Vee - try her singles Destiny, Remember, Blue Disease. & Amanda Lear (her early 80s stuff is just as good as her 70's material. Lime from Canada are another brilliant underrated group too.
