STRATFORD, N.J. -- Kevin McGuire promises to open the door for his prom date and pull out her chair. He vows to treat her with respect and do his best not to step on her feet.

Swift, 22, has not yet commented regarding her invitation, but the Facebook group called "Taylor Swift Take Kevin McGuire to Prom!" has reached more than 60,000 fans.

All pretty normal commitments for a high school senior who's trying to woo his dream date. What perhaps makes his pleas different is the target of his invitation.

McGuire, who's battling leukemia for the second time, is seeking a prom date with pop icon Taylor Swift. Tens of thousands of people, in New Jersey and across the nation, have rallied behind his effort. Three days ago, Kevin's older sister, Victoria McGuire, created a Facebook page intended to catch the singer's attention. It's called "Taylor Swift Take Kevin McGuire to Prom!" and features a picture of the 18-year-old in his Stratford High School Silver Knights football uniform.

The page, which Victoria initially thought would reach only her own Facebook friends, had more than 60,000 supporters by Thursday night. On Twitter, backers of (POUND)teamkevin have been tweeting almost every minute.
"The community has been very supportive of me," said Kevin McGuire, who initially was diagnosed as a 13-year-old in January 2007 and who appeared to have beaten the illness in April 2010.

Swift, 22, has not yet commented regarding her invitation, but Victoria McGuire's opinion is clear.
"Nothing, and I mean nothing, brightens Kevin's day more than Taylor Swift," she notes on the Facebook page. "Kevin deserves more than anyone else a special event in his life€1/8and the one thing he wants is to go to prom with Taylor Swift!"

The prom is set for June 1, McGuire's birthday. According to Swift's website, she has no events scheduled for that day.
The Facebook and Twitter followings are just the beginning of support for McGuire, who currently is hospitalized. At Sterling, several seniors are selling T-shirts and sweatshirts with a Superman logo on the front, and the message, "Team Kevin. We support our Superman" on the back.

McGuire has been accepted to both Rowan University in Glassboro and St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. He plans to study psychology in college, and then counsel children with cancer after graduation.

"Everyone here loves Kevin, and many of our students have known him for years," said Bill Scully, McGuire's guidance counselor at the Somerdale school. "To see his dream come true would mean a lot to them."
Taylor responded throug her FB account:

http://www.facebook.com/TaylorSwift

Taylor just can`t stop with her kindness....no wonder haters are mad...there is no way they can live up to her.

Personally I'd be taping mobile phones to every part of my body while smoking cigarettes via every orifice to avoid this and hasten other proceedings.

Nothing less is to be expected from this fantastic lady.

She is a prime example of how a word class artist should act, its easy to forget she is still only 22 a shining light in the music industry, no wonder she has the respect of everyone in the industry.

What`s so funny about what she said? She did not lie.

Taylor is obviously very highly regarded in the music industry. Just look at the critical acclaim of her albums. Plus may i remind you that Grammy awards/ CMA awards and such are not voted by the fans.

She is not "that" respected by the general public. I think you are confusing these 2 terms here.

illeism is just laughing at the continuous unproveable hyperbole and garbage that geordielady continues to spout regarding taylor swift, as for the taking a fan out its a common publicity stunt and has been done numerous times before most recently by mila kunis who took an iraqi veteran out on a date somewhere, 25% good deed 75% publicity stunt in my eyes

O RLY?

I'll be interested to see the proof of said respect from "everyone" in the music industry.

Take your time.

OK. Maybe not everyone. But she is obviously very loved with all the accolades they throw her way.

Whatever. It was not Taylor who was aching to find a leukemia sick kid to take him to awards. The initiative came from the guy....Taylor is making her dream come true. No harm done.

Why do some people have to be so grumpy about something so positive?

I don't think posters on DS can get the fact that a country artist has British fans, Go figure.

More interested in the next album than who she is dating but this story still made me smile

I think its total jealously that a country artist is in a different class to their fav british chav.

And those who think its some publicty stunt clearly dont understand taylor at any level.

Well, that's something that nobody on this forum could prove or disprove so it's a fairly pointless and empty statement.

But to be fair, there's probably no artist in the world who is respected by everyone in the music industry. That's real life!
