Anyone ever debranded a SGS2?
Is it a big job? I have and Orange branded SGS2, I am sick of that bloody contacts backup app constantly running, I have searched various tutuorials but am unsure what firmware to use, I want UK Sim free.

I debranded my phone, its very easy just read the instructions first. Head over to xda where you'll get all the info. Most of the files are on mutliupload so you will have the source the files from elsewhere as its now closed, I would try sammobile.com though you will need to register.
The latest unbranded firmware is PDA:XWKI4 PHONE: XXKI1 Date: 14/09/2011 Android 2.3.4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1075278 |

I think XWLA4 is the latest firmware 2.3.6, download it off the frankenstein firmwares bit, of that link above.

I have (well not to de-brand, but to try an alternative version), and it's not too tricky, though bear in mind that unlike official updates, some firmware installations will wipe all your settings/contacts/texts etc.
However, I now have a slight dilemma; I want to go back to the 'official' ones so that when ICS rolls out* (next week?) I get it automatically rather than having to plough through forums for the right build. All I find is a list of numerous ROMs for different countries and operators, how do I get myself back on the 'official' line? Kies doesn't recognise the current firmware I don't think. I got my phone from Carphone and on some listings there's even Carphone specific builds! *Yes ICS is expected to drop any day now. I'd suggest waiting to see what comes out rather than put new 2.3.4/2.3.6 firmware on for it to be out of date a few days later. edit: for example from that link, there's -XWKI4- XEU (UK) or CPW both listed under "official firmwares" |
