Providers now having their own telephone numbers
Steven L Hunter

I have noticed that some providers over a BT line are now using their own numbers rather than the standard BT ones for example in Edinburgh TalkTalk are now giving out 0131 629 numbers which this shows up on ukphoneinfo.com as not owned by BT does anyone know which other providers do this as well?

I have just joined Sky and the number I was given isn't a 'normal' BT one for my area.

My niece is with Primus and she also has a different type of number (it's actually a Talk Talk number but Primus appear to be using their broadband network too).

So is it only BT that give out their own numbers now?

I've only really noticed TalkTalk using their own numbers. And not always. Sky always use BT numbers, in my area anyway.

But I've noticed in a few areas BT have added another local code to the phone numbers (the three numbers after the STD). People are often mistaken and think they are TalkTalk or a Sky numbers or something. They aren't BT Retail are using them also.

Yeah I know in Edinburgh BT have added 0131 531 numbers which are not recognised locally but they are actually BT

When my daughter moved into her new place TT gave an unusual number, happened to a friend of hers too who also moved home and went with TT. No big deal really.

MPF providers (ones who deliver their own dialtone, rather than re-sell BT telephony) have their own number ranges, allocated by OFCOM, usually with the same STD code as existing mumbers in the area, but they dont have to follow the old linked number scheme when BT was a monopoly...
Every now and them OFCOM mess around with numbers, because they keep running out of them, however the last tme they made substantial changes they said that should provide enough numbers for quite a while....providers like Talk Talk and Sky who have a large network they own will offer numbers from their own ranges to brand new provides or to people who are not bothered about keeping their existing (BT) number, but many will want to keep the number they already have, so BT have to export the number to the MPF provider on request

I've never seen a seperate Sky number on a new provide. They always go with the area code for where the line is. TalkTalk I have, but not Sky.

But there is the "area code" and then, almost always, at least 1 more recognisable digit. For example on a typical BT exchange the initial "number digit" often has a clear meaning ("5" may be town X,"8" town Y etc.)

In my area BT follows the above scheme and new cable numbers start with "2". I am not sure what a "new install" Sky number would start with!

PS
Just spotted the OFCOM link above! It seems that any Sky issued number in my area would start with "41"

The area codes in my area seem to have no rhyme nor reason anyway to be honest! There's no real pattern as far as town names goes.

All I can say is, in my area BT Wholesale and Sky use 648.... and TalkTalk use 5 something. So it must vary area to area then. New cable numbers start with 2 here also.

Sky definitely aren't using their own numbers here.

Strange! Where I now live (and where I was before) BT have used the prefixes '5', '6, '7, and '8' to indicate diferent towns in the same area code.

Looking at the OFCOM allocations (above in this thread!) it is actually more complex than that. BT actually only have '51'->'55' in the '5' range for example.

They cannot be using BT's (for new supply!). Most Sky numbers will, of course, be former BT ones!

The OFCOM document makes it all clear!

I'll check when I next see a new Sky provide.
Could be of course as you say most people are just taking their old numbers with them anyway so I'm not seeing it.

There are lists you can download, this one is for the Blackpool area.
http://www.ukphoneinfo.com/s1_code_a...s.php?GNG=1253

There are a lot of companies I have never heard of, numbers beginning with 21 allocated to "Danemere Street Creative" whoever they are and many others such as 967 allocated to "Atomstream Ltd"

I suppose they must have some customers somewhere or were some these numbers allocated to companies that no longer exist?

This has been happening for years. I remember the 0207 (formerly 071 and 0171 !) 528 and 0208 975 exchanges belonging to Mercury Communications when there was a duopoly.

I signed up to Post Office Home Phone and I got a BT number so not all companies are giving out non-BT numbers it seems.

That's because a lot of companies such as the Post Office don't offer their own LLU service, they just resell a BT Wholesale product.

Do you know which companies don't offer LLU?
