How melodramatic.
What were you expecting her to do? She didn't perform, she didn't present, she didn't win an award, she didn't even walk the red carpet. She was just showing face.
As for "irrelevant", you must have not been on Twitter at the time nor watched the red carpet. There was a constant stream of people wondering where she was (it trended throughout) and discussing those who turned up in "Gaga-like" outfits, and when Katy and Nicki performed she was talked about further. During the ceremony she was one of the most frequently cut to faces.
The Grammys 2012 belonged to Adele. Everyone knew that. There's only so "happy" you can fake going into something knowing you will not win. At least she didn't throw fits on camera like Nicki and Bruno, or act as bitchy as Katy Perry and Ke$ha did when Gaga slayed the VMAs. I think it's pretty unfair the way people are acting toward Gaga for "losing", like it was a personal slap on the face. Adele winning was awarding Adele, not detracting Gaga or the other nominees.
I agree with your last comment though. However, we're no longer in an industry that requires years away for absence to make the heart grow stronger. Her laying low for the next year would be sufficient. Won't be enough for some, but they aren't likely her target market.
