Connecting a phone to a pc / laptop / tablet

How easy is it for you?

I want to plug my Samsung Galaxy Y into my Laptop (Toshiba, Windows 7), to transfer some photos and music between them.

When I plug my phone into the laptop (via USB) the computer makes the "hardware attached" noise, and the phone also beeps and starts charging.

I downloaded thishttp://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x64-Download-96693.html and ran the setup file but nothings changed.

The phone does have a memory card. When I plug my USB pen or ZEN mp3 player in they appear in "My computer" as removable drives.

Does anything appear in the notification bar (top of screen) when you plug the phone into the laptop? On some Android phones, you are able to select "USB connect" or similar from the notification tray, and toggle USB connection on. Failing that, it might be worth having a look through settings and seeing if it's possible to set the phone's connection to "Mass Storage Device" rather than "Media Transfer Protocol" (if that's what it's on).

So, does the phone give any indication that it is connected to the PC? Have you tried another port on your PC or another USB cable?
