I got a phone call from a sales advisor for three today who offered me the samsung galaxy s2 or the iphone 4s on the one plan at 35 pound per month, I was told that with this package I would get 2000 minutes 5000 texts 5000 three to three minutes and all you can eat data, the main thing that interested me was the guy told me I would be able to tether the internet connection from the phone to pc ps3 xbox etc, just want to know what are the speeds like when doing this? I already have a dongle from three which can reach upto 8mb speeds.

The speeds will be the same as your Dongle assuming the handset the supports those speeds, which the Galaxy S2 and the iPhone 4S support (iPhone 4s upto 14.4mb/s). If you have one of these phones a dongle is not needed. I tether when I'm away from home and some months have reached 70GB with an average speed of 5mb/s

just fyi, don't call back the number who dialed you. Instead call the three sales hotline directly and get the phone from there or in store. That way you make sure you are getting the phone from three and not some dodgy third party that sells three products. Three do that same tariff.

As mentioned in your post
The one plan contains 2000 minutes to any UK number excl 0870/0800 etc...
5000 UK texts
5000 3-3 mins
Ayce data which is unlimited data with speeds up to 21mbps. Will be up to 42mbps by the end of this year with network upgrades. You will get the same speeds as you get on your dongle. When the upgrades on the network are complete your area will probably be able to get up to 16mbps.

I get around 6-10mbps depending on the time of day. I've used ayce for tethering a lot, racked up about 35gb in one month once when I had no fixed line broadband.

So would you reccomend the 4s over the S2? Tethering wise I'm guessing there wouldn't be any difference between the two?. That's the only problem I have my dongle is contracted till august do you think they would let me out of it early to take up there offer of the phone?

Three don't really just let customers out of contract. They might agree to lower the cancellation fee or phone contract cost slightly. Best thing is to ask them. They might be able to do something.

In my opinion I would not get an iPhone. The s2 beats it in every department. Plus if you want fast speeds the s2 can support speeds of up to 21mbps where as the iPhone 4s is only 14mbps, only max of 7mbps for the iPhone 4. Which means you woudnt be able to get 8mbps you get on your dongle on the 4. The only time I'd say get an iPhone is if you already own a number of apple products and all your music / data is on iTunes.

I believe Three do a discount on the buy out fee for current mobile phone contracts if customers want to upgrade early, not sure if this applies to mobile broadband dongles though.

I get 6-8meg in most places with Three on my Galaxy Nexus when using Wifi Tethering. Beware though, Three do offer lower tarrifs with unlimited data but they do not include Tethering, or free voicemail like The One Plan does.

I have the SG2S on the One Plan. I cannot fault it. Tethering is a doddle. Previously I had a IP4 which I found to be a pain when tethering.

With the SG2S you just give your phone a SSID and encryption. Fire it up and get your pc to find the hotspot and voila! Away you go.

I have used it to download numerous programmes from iplayer racking up GB's of usage with no problem whatsoever!

I got my 2S free but on a 24 month contract. That does not bother me as the phone is fantastic and such a breeze to use and connect to anything you throw at it. Oh, I also used it to make the odd phone call too

Yes.

They inspect HTTP Headers and detect whether you're using a browser that's not found on phones.

The One Plan and the "Internet Max 2GB" add on.

You can't combine AYCE and Internet Max.

Nope.

The most I've read is that there's a 450GB "soft" cap, where they phone you to check that it's for your personal usage.

They don't have a fair usage policy though.

just to clear up a few things, you can not together on a pay as you go or pay monthly contract with all you can eat data, unless you are on the one plan OR have bought the internet Max add on which allows tethering on any contract plan for £5.11.

If you tether on any plan other than those mentioned above, you will be redirected to a 3 page which says you can't use your internet connection for tethering. However, it may be possible to tether for a short amount of time before three realise and redirect you to this page.

On the one play, ayce data is not capped in bandwidth or speed, tethering is allowed. There is technically a soft cap @450gb Max per month, (used to be 80gb when ayce was introduced). If someone happens to use this much data in one month, which is near impossible, the guys at three will investigate your account and see if you're using the data for personal use or illegal use. If its personal use they will reset the soft cap. If they find out its non personal use they have the right to cut you off.

But like I said, no one will ever use 450gb in one month.

Doesn't mean to say it's true then? I wouldn't sign up for two years on the strength of something written here that's for sure.

@Dave
What ive written above has been confirmed by three though their call centre and Facebook page. Some guy even made a recording of his call to cs where they stated there was a 450gb cap. The 80gb one was from 2010 when ayce first started coming out.

I don't think a 450GB limit (if it actually exists) would be a handicap to anyone using a mobile phone or data plan for personal use. It's around 15GB per day which is 50% more than BT Total Broadband allows on its standard package for a month using fixed line technology!

of course it won't be, the 450 figure was introduced because of the complaints about the original ayce being capped at 80gb and not being unlimited like advertised. The 450gb figure is just the number on the three system that is used as a soft cap. Three know that no one can use that much so that's why the number is there.

I'm on the one plan with my Galaxy Nexus and streaming Netflix is fine so I guess Sky Go will be OK. Obviously this depends on signal strength and capacity in your area.

Rik.
