Just a quick question about my Android phone - when I enable WiFi, will this automatically turn off/disable mobile internet?

I haven't got free mobile internet yet so need to make sure I only use wifi.

Handset is a Samsung Galaxy.

Thanks

Yes, but if WiFi disconnects it will try and use data again. so go to settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks and un-tick packet data

When I connect my iPhone to my router the 3G changes to the wifi Icon which lets me know that I am not using the 3g mobile internet.

Yes it does OP, the 3G or H indicated will turn off and the wifi symbol will turn on. It is no longer using mobile internet when wifi is enabled.

However when the screen is turned off wifi will usually turn off and any background tasks will use 3G, so if you don't
want to use 3G at all turn that off.

How do I disable mobile internet altogether? Don't have an internet package until mid march and want to make sure the handset doesn't use internet in the background somehow so I get charged.

You should just be able to turn it off. I always turn off data traffic and use WiFi. If I want to use it when WiFi is not available I just enable data traffic, do what I want and turn it off again so it can't clock up data usage without me being aware

Should be in your settings or you could do what I've done, and put the icon on the home page adjust to make it quicker to turn off and on.

A decent thing about O2 is that once you use your allowance there is no charge until you buy more, no sneaky charges!

I disabled Data Network and now the up/down arrows icon has a cross through it, so I'm hoping that's worked.

A good extra safety measure is to change the APN name.

It will currently say something like your operator name and .com, just add the word OFF in the middle so it couldn't even connect if you accidentally turned it on, by adding a word in there it's easy to put back when you do want it to work too.

Just install a widget it makes the whole process a lot easier and simpler. You can use something like Data Enabler Widget.
