LG RHT497 DVD Recorder
At last LG have released upgraded firmware:
http://www.lg.com/id/support/product...roduct-profile The pidgeon English instructions say to burn the ROM file to a CD. I've tried a CDRW, CD, DVD+RW & DVD. The spinning CD icon appears when it is reading the disc. Then disappears. At no time are you offered the option of a software upgrade. Tried bringing the unit up from standy & even a cold start switching it on at the wall with the disc in. Same thing. Even tried putting the ROM file onto USB stick, but because it's not an avi MP3 etc it doesn't appear in the file selection list. Anyone actually done this ? |

You might need to set up your burning software in a particular way to make the disc readable. Try the following, or search the net for other posts about upgrading the firmware on LG DVD Recorders:
1) create an ISO CD-ROM with only one session; 2) use ISO-9660 mode; 3) select "31characters file name length" option 4) burn just the .ROM file to disc using the burn-at-once mode (A.K.A. single session mode), then finalise it Also, try changing the file name from _EU.ROM to _MHEG.ROM at the end. |

Thanks Chris. I've tried all of those options except renaming the file. The downloaded file is a ZIP file which contains the single ROM file. You'd think that it would be named properly for the update but I'll give it a go tonight.

Yes, renaming the file to _MHEG.ROM did work. Cured 1 of the bad bugs, but there is still about 3 left. Daft that downloading a firmware update file that has the wrong name so will never work.

Bugs?
They've fixed the file name, so at least the update works now. That's probably thanks to the jockeymaster
![]() I bought an RHT 497 second hand a few weeks ago, and it does seem pretty buggy. Is there a list of known problems anywhere, do you know? And would you mind telling me which bug this cured, and which it didn't, so I know what to look out for! Thanks Tim |

The bug it fixed was that you can now deleted DTV channels. I'm in a region where I get signals from 3 transmitters so I had about 200 Freeview channels. Each channel was repeated but I just wanted to keep the ones with the best signal, plus delete those that you need a viewing card for and those that I just wasn't interested in.
The subtitle bug. Only way round it is to set the subtitle language to something daft like Russian that isn't going to be present. There is no slow motion on DivX playback There is no option to delete a file on USB. LG have released a newer firmware but I';m using the same method but it won't give me the option to upgrade. Don't you need to rename the file to _MHEG.ROM anymore ? |

Unit won't boot up; just says "HELLO" constantly.
Like Shere Khan, this unti is trying my patience. I ran the latest update, and the unit (an RHT 497C) checked the file, liked it, ran the update, got to 100%, said completed or some such; and then the remote wouldn't work. So, I switched off the box, and switched on, and now it just types HELLO across the LCD display.
If I hold down the "Start" and "Open DVD" buttons, the number 51300 comes up. I've got the old firmware, but can't get to the point when I can run it! I'm starting to think the best place for this is a skip somewhere; can anyone advise? Tim |

To answer my own question you don't need to rename the .ROM file. Quite what this new firmware improves upon I'm not sure as it doesn't address any of the 3 issues I posted about, which were the same issues I complained to LG about.

That sounds bad Tim Didn't realise there was a C variant. I have the 497H was for the European market. The 497 ( no letter ) is for US I thiink. I did try by accident to upgrade using US firmware but it wouldn't let me.
Have you checked the manual to see if there is a button sequence on power up that will force a factory reset ? Yes I know the manual sucks. You can download a PDF version from the LG website if you don't have it to hand. |

I reckon the manual is way beyond "sucks"! There's no button sequence that I can see so I've bitten the bullet and e-mailed LG. Not too hopeful of a result there! But I'll update once they get back to me.
Hope it's not terminal! |

My experience with LG & EMail is that they do respond but with a stock EMail telling you to ring Customer Services. Where did you get your 497C from ?

Second-hand off a local-ads website. I'll not spend a fortune on a premium-rate line, if that's their solution. I'd bin it and get something a little more user-friendly!

Just reading somewhere that a 5 second press of the power button on the unit itsefl to bring it up from standby gives the option for a factory reset.
Can't break it anymore than what it is now. Good luck. |

OK with this new firmware how do you record from the TV Guide ? The on screen instructions say to press the Red button, No that just goes to top of menu where you can change the guide day from today.
Silly me why not just press the Rec button as the instructions on screen must be wrong. That doesn't work either ! |
