Is someone else listening
Sometimes when I'm on the phone to my friend I hear a noise as if someone has pressed a button on the phone and it goes silent for a few seconds, I can't hear her. I always thought she was accidentally pressing something on her handset but she is adamant she's not. We both use cordless phones. I'm just wondering if someone could be listening in to our conversations.

Could she be switching to speakerphone? Then when you ask if she's accidently pressed something, the correct answer is "no".

Is it a modern DECT cordless phone or an old analogue one?

Are you or your friend on Talk Talk LLU or Sky LLU for telephony ( clue is to dial 17070 if you get an AVR 'Hi im Zoe, its Sky, if the tele number is repeated to you but doesnt continue with 'BT Line test services' then probabaly TT, either way, their networks can sound 'dead' when there is no signal being transmitted ( neither party speaking)...probably something like that rather than someone listening in.

Where I currently work they use VoIP and this is very common indeed. The MD likes to save money but it makes us look bad as we have to ask our customers to repeat themselves. Plus a lot of the incoming calls are unexpectedly disconnected!

It's not a crossed line by any chance? Happened to me in 2009. One night I could hear a neighbour's phonecall and I found out that the lines had somehow been crossed and loads of people in my street had been affected. My internet was also really slow that evening.

This problem is happening with our phone - Virgin Media. Trying to contact them has been to say the least horrendous. Seriously thinking about cancelling the phone service and using pay as you go mobile instead.
