I'm hoping to get an iPad as a birthday present in a few months time, by when, the iPad3 is likely to be out and available.

I have an iPhone 4S which, so I'm reading, has a far superior display (resolutionwise) than the iPad2 although rumours say the iPad3 screen will be as good as the 4S screen.

Therefore, does anyone who owns an iPad2 AND an iPhone 4 or 4S notice a reduction in display clarity when going from the phone to the Pad and does it bother you.

I can't decide whether I should try to get an iPad2 or go for the 3.

Of course, these are just rumours but historically, things like these tend to be pretty much as rumoured.

You hold the iPad further away from your face than the iPhone so the display doesn't need to be as good as in terms of resolution. With the release of the iPad 3 the price of the iPad 2 is likely to drop so unless there are features on the new one that you particulary want then save a few bob.

I've got an ipad1 and a 4S and to be honest I don't really notice much of a difference at reading distance.

It's been rumoured that IP2 will continue to sell alongside IP3 (much as the iphone 3GS is still on sale) so it'll be worth waiting to see how much of a price difference there is before you decide. Also I still find the IP1 is plenty fast enough at doing the basics like surfing and mail and there are very few apps specific to the IP2 so it's not like it's old tech being left behind so an IP2 might do just what you want for a lower price.

I've read that one rumour is that when the 3 comes out Apple will only manufactor 16gb wifi only iPad2s. But as you say, I'm assuming the 3 will go into the current 2 price structure and the 2 will be discounted.

All depends what the price differential is. If it's only an extra £80 or so I may as well get the 3 as I'm planning to watch a lot of tv on it so would ideally like to get best display possible.
