I haven't got this model but I would guess the USB socket is just for exporting recordings from the hard drive the same as on my Wharfedale.
I think software updates have to be via the RS port.

The DG250TRA08 being a Top Up TV box, the updates will automatically be downloaded and applied. If the box is dead with an error code on the front panel, then uploading software via the RS232 port may unbrick it (I have an old software version on my website for this purpose).

You might be better off asking in http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=157. Sounds more like a hardware fault to me, possibly the HDD, but not necessarily - could be some other hardware failure. The box might need resetting and HDD formatting, maybe. That would be my hunch, but I'm not the best person to ask, as I've not used any TUTV boxes.

With the USB, I can't be sure what it can be used with the TUTV software, but with Vestel boxes it is generally used for playing MP3s, viewing images and possibly videos too, but it cannot be used to export recordings.

Strange that it has an IDE HDD - must be a really early version of the T845.

The USB port doesn't work on the TUTV PVRs.
