The European and World Football Thread
I was going to call it the foreign football thread, but I'm sure there would be somebody who would complain ![]() Anyway, thought it would be nice to have a thread where other leagues outside of the Premier League could be discussed, whether it be Serie A, Ligue 1, Bundasliga, Eredivisie or even branching out to the likes of Brazil etc. ------- Serie A: P GD PTS 1 AC Milan 25 27 51 2 Juventus 24 22 50 3 Udinese 25 14 45 4 Lazio 25 10 45 5 Napoli 25 18 40 Full table here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...es/default.stm ------- La Liga: P GD PTS 1 Real Madrid 24 59 64 2 Barcelona 24 52 54 3 Valencia 24 8 40 4 Levante 24 -1 35 5 Athletic Bilbao 24 7 34 Full table here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...es/default.stm ------- Bundasliga: 1. Borussia Dortmund - 52 2. Bayern Munich - 48 3. Borussia M'gladbach - 47 4. Schalke - 44 5. Bayern Leverkusen - 37 Full table here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...es/default.stm ------- A list of European results and tables can be found here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...pe/default.stm (Even if it is the rubbish BBC website )Feel free to add any tables or anything you want to this. ------- To add a little bit of news to kick start this, here's some Serie A news. Quote:
Milan stopper Philippe Mexes has defended his actions against Juventus which led to a suspension. “I get hit too.” And here is the incident:The defender was yesterday banned for the Rossoneri’s next three League games after striking Marco Borriello in an off-the-ball incident during Saturday's 1-1 draw. “These things shouldn’t happen, that is clear, but there was nothing vicious in it,” stated the French international. “I suffer a few blows too during games, but I don’t go down to the ground and start rolling around…” The 29-year-old has made nine League appearances for the Rossoneri this season after recovering from knee ligament damage. He will miss Milan’s games against Palermo, Lecce and Parma. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzWYG...layer_embedded Of course this was just one of many incidents in the game, Muntari's being even worst than this one. Elsewhere regarding Milan, Thiago Silva has claimed he knows Barcelona have interest in signing him. Would hope that's not the case for Milan, considering how good he is. |

I'll find a way to keep it updated through the MLS.
Henry scored twice in New York's 4-1 thrashing Colorado Rapids. And Robbie Keane bagged two goals a couple of weeks back against DC United. My club? Torsten Frings is gone for 2 months and we've conceded 6 goals in 2 games!!!! |

might be the right thread to pay homage to Alex del Piero. Nice goal vs Inter in the derby on sunday as (at 37 yrs old) he showed the younger strikers how to put the ball in the back of the net. They may still be top of serie A had Antonio Conte had more faith in him this season. An honourable mention too for Conte's amazing hair revival. On a par with Shane Warne, maybe even more startling.

if it's Roberto Baggio, then it's him. if it's Dino, then it's Del Piero.

I actually thought this thread was a good idea but you're gonna have to keep it updated if you can find time .

I would also say out of those four Zicoz, probably Del Piero for me over the years. Though Totti was up there with him as my favorite, my goodness what a talent he was (and kinda still is). |

Anyway, a quick Serie A update. Quote:
Weekend Results
AC Milan 2-1 Roma Palermo 1-1 Udinese Atalanta 2-0 Bologna Lazio 1-0 Cagliari Napoli 2-2 Catania Genoa 2-2 Fiorentina Novara 0-0 Lecce Cesena 2-2 Parma Chievo 1-1 Siena Juventus 2-0 Inter Milan Inter of course followed this up with the sacking of Ranieri, which comes as no surprise to any single person, because even he knew it was going to happen. It's important for some changes to be made here and for Inter to bounce back next season. They'll need a miracle to get a CL spot for next season, anything is possible in football, but I feel confident, as do most, in saying no chance. No CL football next season, so Inter have a chance to really focus on the league and re build this side in certain areas, as well as implement a new system. Elsewhere, Napoli lost two goal lead late on to draw, while the day before Udinese had struck late on to salvage a draw. These two slip ups meant Lazio crept into third place after a very late goal fro Diakite. Believe me when I say this is going to go down to the wire when it comes to who is going to get that third and final CL place. And at the rate these are going, it really could be any of four teams. On the Saturday AC Milan walked out 2-1 winners against Roma to keep their lead at four points at the top. Roma took the lead through Osvaldo and it took two Ibrahimovic goals to win this one for Milan. No real changes at the bottom as all of the bottom three drew, while Siena also managed to grab a goal back to grab what could be an important point. Big news overall was the injury to Thiago Silva, likely out for four weeks, which means likely a Nesta/Mexes partnership. AC play Barcelona tomorrow, this could prove crucial in that tie. Saturday, Milan travel to Catania in a big game for both, anything other than a loss for Catania will be good progress in their bid for European football. Juventus tough run in continues as they take on Napoli at home, though Juve are STILL unbeaten (14 draws, 15 wins) and seem to perform better against the big sides and as we all know, Napoli shoot hot and cold, never know what you're going to get with them. They also meet in the Coppa Italia FINAL, which Juve knocked Milan out of in the second leg in extra time last week. Quote:

Did see some talk if Liverpool apparently tracking him, likely nothing what so ever in that though. Likely he could be playing for Spain in the Olympics though, let's hope so. So overall, still signs of his talent here and there, but he's struggled to really settle so far. It'll be interesting to see what happens from here regarding him and whether he's at Roma much longer. If he doesn't break into the team and start getting more starts, I'd say he'll likely move on very soon. Would be nice to see him get more chances really. |

That's a shame because he'll miss the Concacaf CL semis as well.
Any chance of Toronto going through without him? Also annoyed that Danny Koevermans has dropped off after a strong end to last season. I'm not fully on board with this Aron Winter managerial experiment, so hopefully he proves me wrong. |

If I may briefly add an update to Olympic soccer, the USA inexplicably crashed out in the group stages after a 3-3 draw with El Salvador in Nashville, after a humiliating 2-0 loss to vaunted Canada.
We had the most players with European experience as well as MLS veterans like Freddy Adu and Jozy Altidore and just completely collapsed. The goal that put El Salvador through was horrible goalkeeping. Not good at all.

Thierry Henry has scored 7 goals in his first 5 MLS games to start this season. Really impressive stuff.

Dortmund win it and go six points clear at the top, 1-0. Robben misses a penalty right near the end and then misses an open net in injury time! Dortmund fire back and hit the bar, awesome finish! Four games to go and Dortmund are six points clear!
Elsewhere Juve have battered Lazio yet once again not taken their chances, which has stopped them running away with the league this season. 1-1 at half time, Juve should win this. |

Serie A returned this weekend after the tragic loss of Morosini, many respects were paid. Udinese were clearly still quite shocked from it all and despite their chase for the third and final CL spot, they seemed happy to get this game out of the way. Hopefully they can keep positive through this and push on through the final few games, a massive tie coming up against Lazio next weekend which will play a massive part in the final CL spot. Elsewhere there was controversy at Genoa, some fans forcing the game to be suspended for about 45 minutes and demanding Genoa players take off their shirts claiming they're not fit to wear them. The protest all broke out in the second half when Genoa were losing 4-0 (and they're a point above the drop zone and in danger of going down). Of course this was the wrong place and time for any protesting as it forced families with children etc to quickly escape the ground, ridiculous really. Reports coming out that Malesani has been sacked again. This is the same manager that was sacked by Genoa earlier in the season, only to then be brought back...only to now possibly be sacked again! Game did resume and ended 4-1 to Siena. Of course the big news of the weekend was the title race between Milan and Juventus. Milan played on the Saturday and were held to a 1-1 draw, Ibrahimovic getting the leveller in the final minutes of the game, points dropped but that could still be a crucial point. Meanwhile, Juve played on the Sunday night against Roma and there's really no sign of them losing their incredible undefeated record. Blitzed Roma 4-0. 2-0 within 15 minutes when Stekelenburg was sent off for taking out Quag, a penalty and red card awarded. Certain penalty, harsh red though, but it's tough to say it changed the game a great deal. Outstanding pass to win the penalty from Vucinic. Vidal were two lovely goals, you'll find it hard to find a better performing midfield player in all of Europe right now and it's going to be interesting to see how this midfield and team in general fair in the CL next season, could be a real force with an addition or two up front. Juventus go three points clear and are in the driving seat with five games to go. Milan now need them to drop points in two games at the least, as Juventus will win the title if it ends level on points due to the head to head meetings. Quote:
League Table

And so the season finished today and Juventus managed to pull off an amazing feat in going unbeaten all season. They mark it with a 3-1 against Atalanta with a very memorable moment as Del Piero scores in his final league game for Juventus. The Napoli cup final will be his final game if he features in it, very emotional scenes for one of the greatest players in the clubs history. Buffon/Del Piero embrace for one final time: http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...34366602_n.jpg http://www.sportmediaset.mediaset.it/bin/90.$plit/C_27_photogallery_6478_listphoto_itemPhoto_6_immagine.jpg Del Piero in the crowd: http://www.sportmediaset.mediaset.it/bin/28.$plit/C_27_photogallery_6478_listphoto_itemPhoto_0_immagine.jpg Fan in tears: http://www.sportmediaset.mediaset.it/bin/46.$plit/C_27_photogallery_6478_listphoto_itemPhoto_8_immagine.jpg And here's a beautiful clip of today's emotional event along with his goal and final trophy lift for the club, most of the crowd were in tears. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=-kB6ViGwqyk Absolute legend that will never be forgotten. Crazy scenes else as Leece are relegated, Genoa leaving it late to pull out the win as Lecce lose elsewhere to Chievo. At the other end, It's Udinese that snatch the third and final CL spot in a crazy day of results. Lazio get a 3-1 over Inter but it's not enough as Udinese secure a 2-0 to secure the third spot, while Napoli also won and finish in fifth. [center] Quote:

It was an emotional day in Italy - Del Piero, Inzaghi both rounding off their careers with the clubs they'll forever be linked with. Really glad Udinese got the CL spot, I hope they make it into the groups this time.
Montpellier just scored an absolutely crucial last minute winner against Lille, which leaves them three points clear with one midweek game to go. On the verge of clinching their first ever league title. |

Pippo Inzaghi signed off with a characteristic goal today earlier, just the right side of offside. What a poacher he's been.
