No offence to Benitez but it would be a strange move. There is nothing wrong with his record and as others have said he has won a lot of trophies over his career but I wouldn't have thought his stock was so high that you would get rid of Ancelotti and give him the job. Klopp maybe but Benitez? Im not sure. Sideways move at the very best.

Nice to see that I am not the only one with doubts over Rafa.

In the case of Benitez it's probably worth remembering he's well liked at Madrid and spent years in management/coaching roles with their youth/b teams etc.

done great things at dortmund but also had a terrible domestic season this year, i dont think rafa has ever been on a losing run like dortmund were on this year.

You say De Gea would rather play for Ancelotti, believing he has a better chance of winning a league title under him. But Ancelotti has also underachieved in terms of league titles. He's yet to win a La Liga title, which Benitez has done.

If you want to criticise Benitez for his lack of titles then Ancelotti isn't a great deal better, is he? His C.V. doesn't paint him as much better as a challenger for a league title.

Wikipedia tells me LvG hasn't won a league title since 09/10. So it's been a while since he's won anything.

What Real Madrid want and what Real Madrid need are two very different things. Sometimes the club itself is unsure where the distinction should be made.

09/10 is not that long ago for LvG, but yes of course the longer a wait for a league title for him, then yes his stock would start to diminish.

Carlo has indeed not got that much better league record (winning one with a cash inflated PSG is not that much of an achievement these days), but to my mind, and in my opinion, (which this is what it is all about) I think he is a better manager than Rafa.
It doesn't have anything to do with Rafa being an Ex-liverpool manager, before that is once again said.

Rafa does indeed have a La Liga title, and credit to him for that, but that was in a different era, one that if I am not mistaken also had Deportivo winning a title.

These are very different times from when he last won La Liga, could do so again, well if appointed Real manager, in a now once again two team league, with Barca harmed by their transfer ban, then possibly so, but in these circumstances, so could a few other managers.

As soon as Suarez hit form, Barca were lethal. But they still needed Madrid to drop points, which they did. Unfair to say that they had no chance when things were still in their hands at one point.

That is not demeaning or putting down Sir Alex, or Rafa's achievements, both of which were very good.

If Real Madrid want a player, Real Madrid get that player, and if they are after DDG, the fact that the manager is Benitez is not going to put him off in the slightest. And at this very moment, Real Madrid are a more attractive club than Man United. They, like United, will be challenging for a title, but Real Madrid will be stronger in Europe. And both Ancelotti and Benitez know how to challenge in Europe.

No there weren't. Atlético won it in 95/96. Deportivo won it in 1999/2000. Valencia won it in 01/02 and 03/04. Other than that it's just Real Madrid and Barcelona. It's far from being an era where anyone could've won it. In fact it's not much different now, with the usual two winning it and the odd other one winning it. Now it's Real Madrid, then it was Valencia. Maybe Sevilla can get themselves into the mix if they keep improving, which would in fact make the era you're talking about apply to the near future.

It's not like De Gea won't outlast Rafa at Madrid anyway. If they sign him and pay big, he'll likely be the first choice keeper for ten years or more. Plenty of time to win leagues and he could well have 6 or 7 different managers in that period.

Im not saying Klopp is better than Ancelotti. What i'm saying is that going from Ancelotti to Benitez isn't a step up.

In terms of CV and history Klopp doesn't rival the other two but in terms of being "the next big thing" he is very much a coveted manager for any big club in Europe and as such I wouldn't have been shocked if Real had thought they had to act now to secure his services before he moves to another big club. I wouldn't have said the stock of Benitez was as high regardless of CV or past achievement.

As another poster rightly said, what Real want and what they need are often two different things and the big name of Klopp would be the sort of thing that I could see appealing to them ahead of Benitez.

Put it this way, if they appoint Benitez and have a bad start I can see him being out of a job faster than you can say "Carlos Queiroz".
