Jesus, that was worrying. Looks like Matheus had a delayed reaction to a clash of heads.

Sevilla retain. Guess they get into the group stages of the CL now?

Well done Sevilla, first team to lift this trophy 4 times.

An enjoyable match overall.

Right result, Dnipro gave a very good account of themselves, nothing to be ashamed of losing to Sevilla.

Chilling moments when the Dnipro player collapsed, hope it only is delayed concussion.

Indeed. The first time they won it was only back in 2006. Also won the Copa del Rey a couple of times in that time, too.

Think that was the case thankfully.

Sevilla showing you can have a decent league season and do well in this competition.

I am not sure why our clubs dislike it so much but maybe Sevilla and others just have more overall quality than some of the English teams that get into it?

I think that it's a self-fulfilling prophecy, with English clubs.

They've convinced themselves that it's a huge disadvantage to their league form, which is worth far more money than any other league.

The players take a subconscious hit to their performance levels, and the managers consciously talk it down.

That's my take.

I think that sounds very reasonable, especially if we combine it with the possibility of a lack of quality in depth in many of the premier league clubs who take part in the Europa league.

Do Valencia still qualify for the CL now Sevilla won the EL? Seems strange if this is the case to allow 5 teams from one country yet when the winner of the CL finishes outside the top 4 as when Chelsea won the 4th spot was sacrificed.

It is very very poor management by our managers in this country, before there was the excuse that financially it wasn't worth the hassle, but that excuse is not there anymore, with the reward of a Champions League place for the winner.

If Champions League teams can manager football during the week, then so should Europa League sides, it should not be beyond the wit of a manager to draw up suitable training schedules to suit their own squads in the Europa League.

Our attitude to the Europa League has been a disgrace for a while, with a Champions League spot on the line,it is even more embarrassing.

Hopefully Southampton, Liverpool, Spurs, West Ham and possibly Villa try their best next season, and that their managers don't once again just put out the reserves.

If these teams want to crack the top four, well this is another way to do just that, without trying to overhaul one of those sides.

Valencia are in the play-off's, with the rest of the Spanish teams in the group stages.

there's a stupid, arrogant attitude to the EL in this country, I have no idea why. Think they're superior?! (Doubt any of the PL candidates in the EL would have beaten Sevilla). Not interested in a trophy so they can finish one place higher? I remember the jokes when Benitez took it seriously and Chelsea won it. Superiority complex is seriously out of place.
Everyone else has to play twice a week, thurs and sunday. Sevilla played 60 games this season and they managed ok.
It was a good idea of UEFA to give the winners automatic qualification into the CL though as an extra incentive.
Last night was a great advert for football on a day that needed it.

One CL place for the winner is not enough incentive to potentially mess up your league position. You can have a great run and still be knocked out in the semis and that is your season down the tubes.

Should teams sacrifice the Champions League too just to make sure that they make it back into the Champions League next year?

Plus, teams who don't have a hope in hell of making the top 4 in the PL should be looking very seriously at the possibility of winning the Europa League.

Isn't that what Liverpool did in the Real Madrid away match?

Because winning most cup competitions doesn't require you to play anything up to and extra half league campaign.

If you don't have a hope in hell of being in the top 4 how did they get into the Europa League.

Regardless the squad depth for successful CL teams is very different to teams in the Europa. Evertons squad compared to City or Chelsea for example.

Apologies for the DM link, but thought this was an interesting piece on Sevilla's transfer business. Very eye opening, especially when you consider Spurs have spent £30m on Lamela and £26 on Soldado in recent seasons.
