However when it comes to Ronaldo and Messi or Ronaldo and anyone all objectivity flies out the window with you.
If Messi made the same statement you would be on here calling it a motivational speech!
Im not going to lie, I love Ronaldo. I think he stands for everything that is great about being a footballer. As a Man Utd fan I have watched him since the day he came to United as a scrawny one trick pony and watched him watch, learn and work his bollocks off to become the best in the world (or close). I have never seen a player in my 30 years of football watching make such a concerted effort to be the best he can possibly be. The result is a goals to games ratio that (Messi aside) is unheard of in world football at any sort of level. He has done that himself, he has created himself through sheer hard work and determination and that is to be admired whether you think he is better than Messi or not. He is the very epitome of making the most of whatever ability God gave you. That shouldn't be knocked, it should be admired, just as it should with Messi. Petty jibes about "important" goals are just that - petty. He is the main man at Real and his goals record shows goals against all levels of opposition.
And for the record he is right. If the rest of his team worked as hard and were as good as him, Barca would be under a great deal more pressure at the top than they are.”
I'll try and address everything you said.
firstly, the respect is definitely mutual. we probably disagree on more things than we agree with, but I always respect your point of view and the way you put your arguments across.
I think I've covered the Barca/Spurs thing in here before, but maybe not. it's really simple though, they're the first team I ever saw play (in 1986, in case you were wondering). I can't prove any of this to you of course, so you'll just have to take my word for it, but I'm definitely no bandwagoner or glory-hunter.
I don't claim to be objective with my preference for Messi or Ronaldo, I'm biased and always will be. However, even with that said, I do try to separate my bias from my objectivity when it comes to comparing them. Ronaldo is a fantastic player, without any shadow of a doubt, and I can accept that even whilst disliking him at the same time. But I'd like to think that even if he were a Barca player and Messi played for Real, I'd be able to recognise the latter as the better player. Basically, I don't accept your assertion that I'm unable to be objective.
Let's be clear on one thing....had Messi made those same comments, I'd be just as critical. Messi just wouldn't make those comments, though, so I don't believe that particular argument is even relevant. You're the team's best (and best-paid) player for a reason, and that reason is that it isn't possible for everyone else to do what you're capable of. You can't take all the credit going when things go well, and then blame your team-mates when it all goes wrong. and in the case of Ronaldo, where other team-mates have to suppress their game in order to accommodate his individuality, it's a bit of a cheek in all honesty. as a leader, you're supposed to make others around you better, and for me that's the biggest difference between he and Messi. take away their scoring, and in Messi you have a player that brings out the best in his team-mates whilst still being great. Ronaldo's greatness comes at the expense of the team. so yeah, maybe if every player in the team had 35 goals this season like he does, they'd probably be top, but that has never happened anywhere ever in the history of football. it just doesn't work like that. but maybe, just maybe if the rest of the team was allowed to be as good as they can be, they'd be right up there too? I keep saying, it's not a coincidence that Barca have won way more than Real during his time there. take both players out over the last 7 years, and both teams would be a lot more equal. some years Barca's supporting cast has been better, and at others it's been Real's. Real have spent more money on players in this time than anyone in the history of the game. they've also had some of the most successful managers of this era at the same time that Barca have had some rookies and unknowns. so if these two are as close or equal as some claim, then what's the reason for the HUGE disparity in trophies?
the goal tallies look great on paper, but a lot of them are just padding. I always say that the season Messi scored 73 goals was probably his worst, and was almost certainly the team's worst also. so, far from being petty jibes, it's just factual that Ronaldo is piling up against poor teams this season, and his goals aren't actually influencing games. when the team have needed big performances, against Barca, Atletico, Sevilla, PSG etc, he's contributed very little. even just one or two goals in those games would've made more of a difference to Real's season than the 8 he scored past Espanyol or the 11 he got against Shakhtar and Malmo. but that's been the case with him for a while now, he's just MUCH better against weak teams than he is against good ones.
