the week's rest (their first for about 3 months) really did Barca some good. 6-0 v Getafe, with Suarez rested, and it could've been 10 or 11 had they really gone for it. Messi could've scored any number he wanted, had that been his motivation. missed yet another penalty though, although he generally tends to score them when it really matters. 37 unbeaten in all competitions and 12 straight wins in the league. 103 goals between the front 3. the stats for the calendar year to date alone are just unreal - P20 W18 D2 L0 F70 A11
Atletico have won 6 of 7 now, and are also starting to score more goals in addition to their ridiculously tight defence (12 goals conceded all season). aside from Barca and Bayern, I think they will be the team no-one wants to draw in next round of the CL.
Real are simply awful. for all the criticism Benitez received, they are far worse under Zidane, who is looking out of his depth. at least the fans are now starting to wake up and realise the players have a lot to answer for, especially some of the ones previously considered untouchable. records simply don't mean anywhere NEAR as much without the achievements to back them up. to paraphrase a quote Sid Lowe is fond of using, the garnish is eating the steak where Real are concerned.
Sevilla continue to be probably the most bewildering team in Europe. 13 straight wins at home in the league, including against Barca, Real, Villareal and Athletico Bilbao, but not a single away win all season. make sense of that if you will. great game against Villareal today, and it's going to be an interesting fight between the two teams for 4th spot and CL qualification. after Dortmund, I make them 2nd and 3rd favourites for the Europa League too.
