How to transfer apps to another phone
Geowitch
28-02-2012
I have just bought an HTC Rhyme on Ebay to replace my contract Desire which has too little memory for me now. Please can someone tell me how to get my paid for apps onto the new phone after restoring my Desire to factory settings?

It's all linked to your google account.

Once you've signed into your new phone got to the 'My Apps' section of the market and you'll see them all there ready to download again.

Thanks, I'll give it a go when the phone arrives.

Titanium back up should let you move all your apps+app data ( save positions in games/config data for e-mail apps etc etc) to an SD card, then all you should have to do is place the SD card in your new phone, run titanium back up, and all your apps+app data should be ported across.
However dont restore the system/phone specific apps that are linked to your phone ( such as google processes/ Market updater and so on )

Only if you're rooted though...

any reasons not to be? its quick and easy, and you should be able to root/un root a device.

Not everyone wants to and on some phones it is neither quick nor easy.

I assumed (maybe incorrectly) that the op hadn't taken that route as he replaced his phone due to memory issues, whereas my Desire has 2gb for apps.

Anyway, they've got a couple of options now so can choose whichever suits them best!

There are ordinary non-technical folks that post here and ask questions. If they don't know that you can simply sign in to a new phone with your existing Google account and redownload their apps, then rooting is going to be well out of their comfort zone!

There are quite a few ordinary phone users who end up here looking for advice who get told to root and put custom ROMs on their Android phones, and they simply don't have enough technical knowledge or ability to fix it if it goes wrong. So for those people rooting is actually bad advice!

I know enough fairly technical people who have bricked devices when a root goes wrong and struggled to fix it, so the non-tech types would be stuffed!

I totally agree with this. I root and ROM devices for fun (yes yes, very sad I know) but I am totally aware that the vast majority of users haven't got the foggiest idea about this. I always advise NOT to root unless I am satisfied that the other person has both the ability to do it and the funds to replace the bricked phone. Hang around XDA forums and you will see many posts from people who have got into serious trouble.

If someone is posting about how will they get their paid apps from one phone to another then I think we can safely assume that they are not asking about Titanium backup (an app I loathe with a passion), because if they had root they would have known about it in the first place and wouldn’t come to a tech free site like this.

Android can be just as user friendly as iOS or WP7 but all the geek talk (which I enjoy) can be very off putting.

Not sure hwo much memory is allocated for apps on the Rhyme, but you may need to move some apps to SD card during the installs in order to accommodate all installations.

I'm very techincally minded but simply refuse to root my phone. My friends (now ex) rooted her Samsung Galaxy and ballsed it right up.

Sandvold ICS - it's by no means complete, the camera preview doesn't work and gmail seems to sync when it feels like it but it's good enough for daily use.

As the OP thank you for your kind words grumpyoldbat. I am not very technical compared to most of you which is why I ask simple questions. I now have my new phone but cannot find the My Apps section of the market. I am signed in. HELP!
