wasn't that pretty much when widescreen became the digital standard? Even latter end CRT TVs were sporting widescreen. Tell the media companies and film studios to go back to shooting in 4:3 and see how far that gets you. Face it, that asecr ratio has been dead a long long time.

4:3 may very well be antiquated in other larger devices, such as TV's and computer monitors, but in a tablet device I personally think that it works very well. The simple reason for it working, in my opinion, is that a 4:3 format makes it more comfortable to hold in portrait orientation.

As for things like movies, anybody who wants to watch a movie and get the full cinematic experience will not be watching it on a tablet, no matter who makes it. So as far as missing 1/3 of the screen, watching on such a small screen, even a 16:9 screen, means your missing a lot anyway.

For the record, I don't own a iPad, an iPhone or any other Apple device. I own a Motorola Xoom & an HTC phone.

But didn't apple state that the increased resolution was great for watching video?

I'm very confused ..... is apple saying its a good way of watching video or not??

To be fair I CAN see benefits of 4:3 for some actions (eg book reading) but most TVs and monitors now are 16:9 (ish) so for many uses 4:3 does look a little old fashioned.

Maybe its retro-chic like the screen off animation in android

Good on ya!

If you've weighed up the options and chosen the iPad this is a great announcement for you. A better unit than you would have got last week for the same money. I'm very pro tablets. I think they are great

I will probably end up getting a new iPad even though I only bought an iPad 2 in December.

Apple now want iPad retina size images on their app store page for new app submissions so I either have to buy a new iPad so I can use it for capturing screen shots or get a 30 inch monitor and use the simulator for capturing screen shots. Seeing as a 30 inch monitor costs around a grand i think the iPad will be the cheaper option if I want to carry on making apps.

Surely that's not the case!?

You just need to resize pics to the right resolution???

Or are you just looking for a reason to upgrade???

If you resize the images up from the iPad 2 resolution they would probably be rejected by Apple for not being native iPad 3 screen shots.

After a bit of digging around I have found a keyboard short-cut for grabbing a screen shot in the simulator so hopefully that will save me £400.

IMO it would be better waiting for next years one. Apple usually goes in cycles over 2 years a big change (the screen in this case) followed by a minor one.

The screen is the only reason why I would think about upgrading to the new iPad. I read a lot of books and magazines on my current iPad so the extra resolution would make it easier to read on. I will probably wait until I need to buy one for a job rather than getting it just for the sake of it. I only got the iPad 2 because I was writing an app that needed the camera.

Why not just buy a 32" LCD full HD for about £250

Full HD monitors are only 1920x1080. To see the whole of the iPad retina simulator you need a monitor that is at least 2048 x 1536. Something like this.

Did you read the first part of the post? The iPad is a handheld computer that can also be used to play videos, it's not a handheld TV.

I'll be getting one and running Kindle Reader on it. Does this mean I'm an idiot because I could have just got a Kindle?

I think they ask because they know the answer yet still want someone to say it. Then they can come back with 'Hence why I won't get a new iphone/ipad i whatever'. There is method to the madness

I'm hoping to buy an iPad in May as a 40th birthday present. Probably the 16gb wifi model. Question is, is the new iPad worth the extra £70 over iPad2? I suspect yes but need to convince the wife.

I want it for tv (particularly Sky) and games. Thinking its wirth getting the retina display (especially as I'm used to it on my iPhone 4S).

No. Ever heard people moaning how terrible the iPad 2 display is? Nope. Ever heard people moaning about how sluggish the iPad 2 processor is? Nope. Spend your £70 on apps and games.

don't think TBH if it's worth it or not until you see how good the screen is when its released then check both models out side by side and go from there

I disagree and I'm an iPad 2 owner. The display of the iPad is good but no where near as good as the display on my iPhone, I would happily pay 70 quid for 4 times the resolution, quad core graphics, decent camera and possibly 1GB RAM.

I would spend the extra £70. Although at the moment the iPad 2 will run everything there will come a point when iOS updates will start introducing features only for the new iPad or above, as happened with the iPhones.

Or like iPhoto not working on the iPad 1.

I wasn't aware of that. Is it because the original iPad only had 256MB RAM?

Is the difference that noticeable? That's what I'm concerned about.

Do you have an Apple Store nearby? If so, pop in after launch and compare the two. If not, wait for some reviews and user comments.

I'd pay the extra £70, though...I think it would be worth it for the increase in resolution and in graphics, especially given you want to use it for TV and games.

But the best thing to do is see it for yourself.
