Ha, nice, better safe than sorry Gotta use that loan for something, after all...

My last one was 32GB. I've gone for 64GB this time.

I've just noticed that tesco have reduced the price of their iPads now. Does this mean they'll be selling the new iPads soon?

They sold iPad 2s on launch day (I got one) so I assume so.

a very under welming device from apple. whilst other manufactures are releasing quad-core devices, all apple can muster is a dual core device. with quad core devices available soon, you got to be a die hard apple fan to buy the iPad3. the screen is very good, but the rest of the device is a let down.

Dual-core CPU, quad-core GPU.

Why is it a let down?

Why do you need to be a die hard Apple fan to buy it?

Screw specs. Content, ecosystem, user experience... they're the big things.

The majority of tablet consumers quite clearly don't give a toss about detailed tech specs.

Given the ever increasing sales of the iPad every quarter, I very much doubt that only die hard Apple fans are the ones who buy it and will continue to buy it.

I don't know about that, the entire 3mp display is a game changer, what do you do on such a device, web and text. And up till now the tablet was kind of inadequate at the text bit, zooming out on a webpage with a 720p resolution is just bad, and its not enough resolution to render text from books or comics or magazines well. In other words the tablet is finally doing what it was intended to do in the first place...replacing the print media. Turns out doing video and games is far easier than words...

As for things like movies, anybody who wants to watch a movie and get the full cinematic experience will not be watching it on a tablet, no matter who makes it. So as far as missing 1/3 of the screen, watching on such a small screen, even a 16:9 screen, means your missing a lot anyway.

For the record, I don't own a iPad, an iPhone or any other Apple device. I own a Motorola Xoom & an HTC phone.”

Mainly tablets are for text 99%of the time, I don't think I've actually watched a full movie on mine...just can't be bothered. 16:9 only gets useful at 20+ inches.

It's nice, perhaps. But somehow I cope on lower res and lower ppi screens for web browsing for the last 15 years, and I don't consider them "bad".

Low ppi is a much differernt matter on a computer monitor, so yes, however navigating text and web on something as small as a tablet or smartphone and it becomes quite important.

Only if you think that's the only factor that's relevant.

I can't speak for anyone else, but for me what makes the iPad stand apart from other tablets isn't the theoretical benchmarks of the processor on board, but UI and the multitude of apps that are available for the iPad.

And its safe bet that the already phenomenal sales of the iPad are probably about to increase further. Meaning that it will remain dominant in its market, meaning that developers will continue to be more likely to develop for the iPad than Android tablets.

Yeah, the new iPad is so crap, so awful that it's already sold out online, both here and the states and probably in the other launch countries too.

Seriously, not everyone is spec hungry.

I know lots of people who wanted an iPad after I got mine, but waited as the new iPad was due.
However as the new one is sold out already, they've opted for the iPad2 instead as its now cheaper.

I expect many more people are doing the same thing and Apple are still seeing massive sales of the iPad2

It is insane to think that they've been as successful as they have been over the last few years, but in all likelihood iPad sales are probably about to go off the chart the same way iPhone sales have done since the 3GS.

In comparison to other tablets released recently, it is a let down. As far as the eco system goes, thats already there for the ipad1 and 2. So I dont get why people need to upgrade to the ipad3 to get those.

Apple will always sell their products. There are millions of people out there that will buy their products without thinking about it. Just because they sell millions is no indication of how good their products are.

When you say a majority of users dont give a toss about specs, you mean apple users dont give a toss. They cant, if they did they would have to buy non-apple products.

The bump in screen resolution is not a game changer You are deluding yourself if you think it is. Its an upgrade. I use my tablet for surfing, emailing and reading. For these tasks, the bump in screen resolution will not give me that much. It is defiantly going to be a very nice screen to look at, but most people will not get that much from it.

As a consumer, I don't care how many cores my device has. I care about the user experience, and iPad is so far ahead of Android tablets in this area it's just unreal.

http://blog.laptopmag.com/four-cores...tablet-app-gap

Apple now have 200,000 tablet optimised apps available.

Seriously, developers are just not buying into Android tablets. If Google want to be able to seriously challenge iPad they need to start invigorating tablet app development, and fast!

Yeah that's right, ignore the opinion from millions of people and all the major tech sites...

You can't just look at raw specs such as clock frequence and gauge what is fastest, look at the iPhone 4S vs Samsung Galaxy S2 for example, the 4S wins in almost every benchmark, especially gaming.

There is no way to know which tablet is the fastest but I'm sure sites like Anandtech will do benchmarks soon enough.

My iPad has been dispatched too, pity it'll be kept in some high security dispatch centre for almost a week though, I want it now!!

As for tech specs, they are not the be all and end all. I personally think the ease of use and apps are the most important and I think that is where the iPad stands above the rest.

Another example of this is with the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. The PSP was more powerful, had a larger widescreen display, yet the DS sold more because the games were better.

The same can be said about the 3DS vs PS Vita, they launched at the same price but the 3DS sold twice as many.

Its not that specs aren't important. Its that they're not the only thing.

I think John Gruber's blog says it all:

'"AP: ‘New iPad Expected to Have Modest Upgrades’ ★
Peter Svensson, writing for the AP:

Apple is expected to reveal a new iPad model on Wednesday, with a sharper screen and perhaps an option for faster wireless broadband. The upgrades are relatively minor, but the iPad is secure in its position as the king of tablets."

I suspect this is a prelude to much of tomorrow’s post-event coverage, echoing the initial tech press reaction to the iPhone 4S. But if a faster processor, more RAM, a double-the-resolution retina display, a better camera, and maybe even LTE networking make for a “modest” update, then what would it take for the iPad 3 to be deemed an immodest update? A fusion energy source? Teleportation? A camera that sees into the future?'"

When you buy an iPad (or iPod or iPhone or any Apple product) it is less about specs and more about "user experience" backed up by a wealth of content.

The upgrade is necessary to keep the platform fresh. They aren't going to equip it with more processing power because it doesn't need it, but a whizzier graphics chip and higher-res graphics moves the platform further into the arena of being a portable gaming device.

Plus, the cheaper iPad 2 and those selling their old one's on eBay will give the user base a further boost.

It is a win-win situation for Apple, despite what the so-called "experts" say.

I'll say this though - its a shame they didn't upgrade the front camera to a FaceTime HD camera.

Quad core for sub-PC devices = willy waving for spec nerds.
