what's with the hints about 'touch'? Are they going to revamp the interface dramatically?

I doubt it.

Better cameras and screen though.

The image I saw for the event announcement was lacking a Home button...perhaps it was just in landscape orientation, but it may be that Apple is ditching the Home button. It has been rumoured before, and the new gestures in iOS mean you can use an iPad already without touching the Home button at all.

Leaked panels already show a part for the button.

I agree, very boring of them not to do what 99.9% of websites actually used nowadays!
99.9% of websites use Flash in 2012?

Either I've misread your post, or missed something huge.

And that's something worth talking about?! My ipad's got less buttons than yours? I do wonder when their hardcore fans will run out of patience with that sort of 'innovation'. Quite a few of the competitors have already ditched hardware buttons I believe....

Ooh I'm looking forward to seeing the launch event. I hope the price points don't go up.

They may patent the 'no home button' next and make everybody else to have one

Rumours are that the prices will go up by about $100 so I guess that's about £80.

I'm in the market for an iPad and plan on getting one as a 40th birthday present in a few months. I'm interested to know the specs (and prices) to help me decide between a 3 or a 2.

I must admit, as I'll be using it extensively for watching tv and playing games and surfing, the better display is winning me over so all depends on the price differential.

Production prices are falling all the time but there is a chance of a price rise if it's quad core.

Though why not. If it remains popular increasing the 50%+ profit margin can be done.

Also I wonder what the increase in cost will be for the display compared to the iPad 2s display which costs around £80 excluding VAT.

The iPad 2's display is far from awful, it's very bright and can be viewed from any angle, however I do notice the drop in PPI after using my iPhone all day.

That's my concern. I have a iPhone4S which I use a lot and would continue using out and about so would ideally like to maintain the better display. When I had a 3GS and my wife had a 4 the display difference was very noticable.

Last year the release date was around a week after announcement, IIRC.

----------

I don't see why the price should rise.

The iPhone has held the same price points, even when the 4 came out with its Retina display.

The iPad 2 held the same price point for 16GB, with the 32GB and 64GB actually coming in cheaper than the equivalent iPad 1 price, even though the iPad 2 had a dual core processor, more RAM, cameras, etc.

Its not that likely to have significant bugs though. Essentially its going to be an iPad 2, with a much bigger screen, better processor and better cameras. People (and I include myself in that) are hardly taking that much of a risk by buying one at launch. If there is anything wrong, I expect they come with a guarantee.

The point is that it's not a brand new piece of tech, you essentially know what you are going to get based on iPad and iPad2. And if you are going to buy one, you may as well try and get the latest version.

Going by rumours the iPad 3 is just gonna be the same shape/design with a better display and internals. Assuming this is the case you are quite safe to buy one at launch IMO.

Considering touch screens supposedly start at $12 I had it priced at a maximum in bulk of £30.

Your prices conservatively exclude traditional discounts which can be between 50 and 80%. Declared and real are two different things. Those Intel chips for their ultrabooks were/are an exception to this rule, which is why manufacturers complained very strongly.

I doubt that Apple could keep a new design under wraps, it would have leaked out by now like the iPhone 4 did.

Those screens are of poor quality though, often the accuracy isn't very good and the brightness/viewing angel is poor.

A 10 inch screen at 300+ DPI if true will be very expensive IMO as there is nothing else like it out ATM.

No home button? Gesture based? Sounds a lot like the way my playbook works. RIM should perhaps give apple a taste of their own medicine and sue them. It if course Apple don't steal other companies ideas and tech.
