I am a big fan of Leona Lewis and most of us are aware of the huge success of her first album and then the under performance of her second album and now everyone says she is finished, so it got me thinking about singers who went on and recovered from the sophomore slump.

For example, Nelly Furtado's first album sold over 7million copies worldwide, but her follow up album underperformed, but she came back strong with her third album and sold over 10million worldwide.

So what other singers have came back strong after a poorly received second album?

mariah carey`s 2nd album `emotions` didn't under perform as such selling around 8 million copies. however, the sales were significantly lower than her début which shifted over 15 million. then she came back with `music box` and sold over 32 million copies.

she did have the `mtv unplugged ep` in-between `emotions` and `music box. which helped establish her further worldwide.

I would say Mariah Carey Emotions sold well below her debut and is still her lowest charting studio album in the US (4) but came back with Music Box.

Phill Collins to a degree his second album hello i must be going sold less than his first then his third was a huge seller.

Anastacia did, her 2nd one was also really big, not quite as big though and her 3rd was absolutely massive, but sadly she flopped after her Greatest Hits with Heavy Rotation. :s

I remember Kate Bush's 2nd album Lionheart performed badly and is still her lowest ranking at no. 6. Hammer Horror, the first single, flopped (44) and it's follow up, Wow , didn't get into the top ten. There were no more singles from the album.

Her next album - Never For Ever - was no. 1.

I think that happened because after single 4 from her debut came out and peaked, emotions came soon after. IMO they should've left it a little longer. I got the opinion that Mariah was hot with the kids, and not so much with the parents. Her debut topped the charts after mass grammy exposure.

Yeah she had a choice wait or release straight away she chose to capitalise on the exposure gained from Grammy's etc.

It worked out for her in the end. She got accolades immediately due to her songwriting

another 2nd album that sold badly at the time was blur`s 2nd album. i think it sold about 40k in the first year and it finally got a gold certification two years later. a year after `modern life is rubbish` they released `parklife` and that sold over a million in the uk.

It is good to know that there have been plenty of successful acts out there who have recovered from under performing second albums. I don't get why people are always so quick to write singers off and then also criticise them for taking their time recording, when at the exact same time they are going mad because acts like Rihanna are releasing albums every year and they wish she would take her time with her albums.

that is a good point and i would suggest people just like moaning to be honest. with leona i think she has done the right thing postponing album #3. there will be cynics that will say its stupid and she will never find another `bleeding love`. however, you never know and i would suspect should she find another gem. well i bet she would have another worldwide smash on her hands.

I had actually forgot all about Gabriella Cilmi, hopefully all three of them can make a comeback too.

Nelly Furtado
Folklore was a slump. Three years later, she came back with Loose and was bigger than what she was with her debut.

i am going to put forward cher and janet jackson. both their second solo studio albums charted worse than the first and both went on to have huge successful albums later in their careers.

Yes but Janet Jackon had no success with her first two albums and Control her third was technically her international debut so not a sophomore slump really

well technically yes. internationally it was her début, but it was her third studio album and her first album charted higher than the second in the us. however, i am running out of examples.
