I recall on Liverpool’s return to Europe, their games were featured live on BBC 1. If my memory serves me right, the programme was billed as "Liverpool in Europe" rather than Sportsnight. Was this the case?
Also were the kick off times altered to 7.05pm so that they could end before the 9pm news?

Any other info is welcome

Yes, and their Cup Winners Cup ties in 1992-93 kicked off at 7.35 so they could show Eldorado first.

Did this game mark Alan Hansen's punditry debut on the BBC? Very nervous, bless, swiveling his chair.

Off the top of my head,I'm sure most of the games was on BBC1 at 7 o'clock but a couple of them was on bbc2 as Liverpool got a cricket score 1st leg.Think it was the 1st and 3rd rounds against an Icelandic and Swiss side where this happened

Do you think the BBC will ever try to get European games back - even if its the Europa league?

They were from Finland and Austria. Their most exciting game was the second round, second leg match against Auxerre when they won 3-0,having lost the first leg 2-0. They went out in the quarter final against Genoa.

I was close then
I remember that Auxerre game as was on a school trip and had to sneak out of some entertainment nonsense some of my fellow pupils put on to try and find the telly in a hostel to watch it.Was given away where I was the loud cheer I done when that 3rd went in

As a Liverpool fan, I remember it well. Liverpool were coming back to European competition after their Heysel European ban - which had lasted a year longer than other English clubs. They had been the dominant force in European football prior to Heysel, so it was a pretty big deal. And of course, the previous season Man Utd had won the European Cup Winners Cup, so it looked like English teams were likely to pick up where they left off. So, it seemed like quite a canny move by the Beeb to show Liverpool matches. Of course, in the interim the club had declined somewhat, so their performances were fairly unimpressive. Apart from a great result against Auxerre, the UEFA Cup campaign was pretty lacklustre. Although eventually the glory days would return.

Nope, as these are all centrally contracted these days (and before anyone mentions that preliminary qualifying games are not part of the central broadcasting contract, why the hell would the Beeb be interested in those?)
