In the very early sixties, they attracted a lot of screaming fans due to their Cliff association. This pissed them off as noone could hear them play, they used Vox AC15 amps and asked Vox to make bigger amps for their next tour. Vox were unable to provide in time, but suggested removing the feedback filter from the AC15's. The filter was designed to prevent distortion, removing it meant they could play 'one louder' as it were and the slightly overdriven sound was actually pleasing and cut through the audience noise(nowadays it would hardly be called distortion, just a touch of overdrive, the sound was still relatively clean, just more cutting, but it was enough in those days). Other bands requested the same, so Vox didn't put the filter into some of their new ac30's. (The Beatles especially liked the better power of the overdriven Vox AC30's, as it helped cut through the audience screams). This distorted sound became more and more popular via bands like the Yardbirds, The Kinks and The Who(who all detested screaming fans and just turned everything up as loud as possible) and eventualy manufacturers made special boxes to induce the distortion even more and innovative muscians like Jimi Hendrix/Page, Iommi and Blackmore(and Clapton for a while), amonsgt others, took it even further. The typical Hardrock/Heavy metal instrument dynamics developed from this. Sorry, gone realised I've way off topic, but it seems shame to delete it now Ive written it.
