Speakers / Decoders
Landlord

I've just bought a new TV (it's a HITACHI C28WF530N) . It only has nicam stereo and I want to enjoy Dolby Digital sound, so I'm thinking about buying a decoder / speaker set. I play DVD's through a Playstation 2.

I was thinking about getting the Digiton DS1 from Futuretronics as it has a good review in DVD review magazine and is in my price range (I don't want to spend any more than £250).

Am I right in thinking that I can connect the Playstation 2 to it using the digitial optical lead (which will give me Dolby 5.1 when playing DVDs) , and that by plugging the TV into it via the stereo leads from the TV I will be able to get Dolby Pro-logic from Sky digital broadcasts? - I watch more films on Sky Digital than DVD and so that is a must... Does anyone know if the Digitron DS1 is any good - are there any better all in one speaker / decoder sets out there?

Cheers

Hi, you are spot on with your connections. I cannot comment on the amplifier you are looking at. I have a Sony HTK 215 but this is a bit out of your price bracket. Another point to look for in an amp is that it can also decode dts which IMO is better than 5.1.

Cheers Wicket... I've found a review of the Sony Model and I might be tempted by that....

I was thinking of getting the HTK-215 [high st price - £350, Robert Whyte - £290]

Then I saw the HTK-475 which would be better for music aswell as films (see Sony website). It retails at £400 in Currys but Robert Whyte do it for £290.

As Robert Whyte are based in Glasgow your local Currys or Dixons will not beat the price (10 mile limit), unless you ask very nicely. You could get it mail order but their delivery is not cheap.

BUT if you have a good credit card with a price promice you could get the difference refunded on it.

If I can get to Glasgow soon I will buy the HTK-475 in Currys who will beat the price by 10% of the difference (£279) - that would piss them off. Otherwise I will buy it in Currys in Inverness and get £110 refunded on my Barclaycard.

The cheapest I can find the HTK 475 for is £319 (here http://www.hifibitz.co.uk/warehouse/...text=avsystems)...It does look good though!!

I have the HTK 475 and can highly recommend it. Lovely sound from DVD, Sky+ Box, CD's and the inbuilt tuner.
