I saw One Direction perform at a Capital FM concert last year and thought they sounded awful...and it actually sounded like a pre recorded vocal that they were miming too. The only one who actually had a really good voice was Liam. The one that stood out as being really bad was Harry. I didn't really think about it again, but I just watched a performance of them on a tv show and Harry sounds awful!! Then I remembered watching that documentary they did for ITV1 not long ago, and I remember Harry getting upset because he couldn't sing a line in 'What Makes You Beautiful' properley....it was literally just a really short line at the end of the song and he just couldn't pull it off. It got me looking back at their XF performances and in the judges houses one, Louis is actually miming...he's moving his mouth but nothing at all is coming out! He does it on the live show XF performances too. I think they fit well together as a band, but it's unbelievable how bad they are at singing. Has anyone else noticed this?

Ain't you the one who thinks One Direction are as big as The Beatles?

I think they're terrific singers tbh, check out this acoustic performance:

Vocals are flawless.

But they haven't just sung that and then it was uploaded to YouTube. They sung it, it was filmed, and then it has gone through post production before it was put on YouTube.

They are all terrible (apart from, perhaps, Liam, who is average). They have no vocal talent at all. The tweenies only like them because of their looks and personality.

NONE of them can sing. Harry is an atrocious singer, Niall and the other bookends don't really do much at all....Liam is a passable singer but is still distinctly average as far as vocals are concerned....

It's clear that their success is not based on talent as is the case with an alarming number of other popstars in the charts currently...

And? It still proves they can sing, its acoustic, therefore live and without effects etc.

It's gone through post production!! They sang it acoustic and it was filmed, but before it was uploaded to YouTube it was altered it in an editing suite...altered the vocals, made them a lot more clearer, raspier etc.

Just because they are using 'guitars' doesn't mean it's live...

The video has clearly been edited and their voices manipulated. You'll be trying to convince me a Big Mac is 100% pure beef next...

You can add Olly Murs to that list aswell... do people really get paid to dress this lot? They all walk about in these huge trainers and colourful tight trousers. They look like right nob heads

It bugs me when people make such a MASSIVE deal about vocal ability in the pop world...

...They're a teenage pop band... their fans arn't sitting there thinking "They've nothing on Mariah" or "Oh I wish they'd hit a high note there when they were singing 'Na na na na na na na na-na-na"...

Their fans are either after a catchy song, or a piece of them intimately. If they duet with Adele, by all means, compare their singing ability, but just look at things in perspective.

That's my idea of hell right there.

They can't sing. If they could no-one would be criticising them as much. Any of the band is interchangeable....none of them are particularly talented in anyway.

They fill the spot of inane vacuous boyband perfectly, but that's about it.

Haha! I can see her just smoking a cigarette with the big 60s hair, and 1D turn up in their matching casual suits (As ye do!) and just cackling and going "What the f**k are yous lot wearin', eh!?!"

Difference is JLS look trendy. 1D don't. And 1D are clearly styled.

Because they get paid a LOT. At Motown rule #1 was you have to be able to sing and well. Vocals are rule #1. Otherwise what's the point? It's not hard to have a decent voice. Boyz II Men had great voices, as did Destiny's Child and SWV and En Vogue. And that's what made them the modern standard for r&b groups. It's all about standards. What you expect.

i agree, if i have to read another self indulgent post about how someone is vocally trained and knows the difference between octaves i think i will scream. they are a pop outfit making music for kids, they do a good job in terms of that.

But that isn't the point. Just because they are popular with teens, doesn't mean they should be okay with not wanting to be great at what they do vocally. Destiny's child were the r&b group for teens when I was a kid and they had incredible voices and harmonies. It's all about the standard, not just settling for average because you can. They don't have to be Whitney standard, but at least try. 6 months of classical training whilst recording their album would've done wonders.

i agree, there have been worse boy bands in the past in terms of vocals. of course they are not the best vocalists in the industry, but they make music for kids. most adults don't take they seriously as artists anyway.

One Direction are NOT an R&B group...

Also, Destiny's Child and En Vogue would be the last groups I would think of when talking about 1D. I would compare them to The Prodigy before either of those groups.

POP music is not about vocals, it's about energy and the whole package. It is lovely when an artist or group has tonnes of talent with it, but realisticly, it isn't a must have. 1D can hold a tune, end of. They are not overly accomplished, but they can sing and harmonise. Also, the public voted for them for weeks, months even, so if they're making a go at a career, so be it. If people arn't interested in them or their songs they'll shrivel and disappear.

i agree, their fans expectations are not that high and people are making some bizarre comparisons in this thread.
