well janet peaked in 2001 and beyonce in 2009. whitney in 1999.

well for rihanna i can see the radio still playing songs like umbrella, only girl in the world, disturbia, love the way you lie, we found love, and dont stop the music in 20 years. while gaga, will play just dance, poker face, bad romance, telephone, born this way and the edge of glory.

Haven't we been through all this before in another thread about Whitney?

Janet did not 'peak' in 2001 or Whitney 'peak' in 1999.

Or do you mean 'peaked' in your lifetime, or peaked in your version of events.

No offence but I think your musical history knowledge is very limited.

hits wise 2001 for janet and for her commercially probably 1993. whitney, well commercially its 1992-93ish but hits wise 1999.

The Spice Girls' success may have been relatively short-lived but they are certainly iconic.
If an act defines an era in pop culture, and are as much of a symbol of a certain decade as The Spice Girls are of the 90's.. then you're iconic whether you lasted 5 years or 50.

You can't really compare Rihanna to iconic performers like Janet, Whitney or even Beyonce because they are in another league all together both as artists and performers... I guess 10 years from now we'll be able to see how much Rihanna has achived and what sort of artist she has evolved into... as of now she is just another female pop artist with catchy tunes and a bangin' body.... she's not the greatest singer but she does have a good tone to her voice, her dancing is not all that and her stage shows lack fire and excitement something she needs to work on desperately.

lets what happens as it is beyonce is still being remebered 15 years of success. her songs from destiny's child are being remembered like say my name, independent women, jumpin jumpin, survivor, and bootylicious. and of course her breakthrough solo hits crazy in love, naughty girl and baby boy. her more recent hits like single ladies, telephone, sweet dreams, irreplaceable, deja vu, halo and if i were a boy are gonna be remembered 20 years from now.

My point was I didn't understand why you were lumping them all together. It seems as if you don't know all that much about music in general, because a lot of your threads only contain about 4 artists. I've never seen you diverge away from pop anyway.

Yes she is, but only when she goes to bed at night and dreams

i mentioned them because they lasted along time. usually in an industry where you last you know 10 years tops but these ladies lasted longer with their success of 13-15 years. lets see if rihanna can last that long of 13-15 years tops.

She's nowhere near as talented as the name's mentioned.

Take her autotune away from her, and she's nothing.

Becoming more explicit isn't helping either. She was more appealing as a cute Caribbean girl.

Westlife where a boy band who had 14 number one's in there shortish career churned out one after the other, most of the later one's hyped by Simon Cowell TV programmes (they where on his label), and then disbanded with no musically legacy and the majority of people couldn't name five number one songs by them or actually care.

Unfortunately much as I think Rihanna is talented, this is the direction she has been pushed or decided go in-one song after another. If she prefer's this to releasing quality songs at a slower pace which will be remembered in 20, 30 years, then that's fine. That's not to say she hasn't done big tracks, she has, but musical trend's aside, Umbrella and one or two other's will stand the test of time-but there is a lot of unmemorable stuff as well..

Janet Jackson at least to me anyway, is a legend. Quality songs, amazing back catalogue.

Beyonce is good but apart from the stuff with Lady Gaga recently she' has offered anything that's interesting musically certainly with the last album.

Whitney Houston-when she was at the top of her game she was unreachable.Rihanna does not have that level of talent nor fame-it was a much more crowded music business in the late 80s/90s than now, huge competition from many more global star's.”

I think a LOT of her music will still be remembered in the years to come.

Especially We Found Love, Umbrella, Love the Way You Lie, What's My Name & Only Girl

Umbrella might be remembered.

Nothing else though.

Rihanna could have done so much better. she could have come around with a distinct Caribbean sound and kept her clothes on and it would have worked. I really liked her debut album, Good Girl Gone Bad and Rated R. They were all fantastic albums and i will certainly still be listening to songs from these albums in 20 years time. I dont really think she can be compared to Whitney or Janet as they are from a different era to her. At a push you might be able to compare her to Gaga/Beyonce as they are her contemporaries, but at the end of the day they are all artists in their own right, and at this stage its still relatively difficult to predict how their careers will pan out, and why does it matter? at the end of the day the music is all that matters

She borrowed a heck of a lot from Madge. So yeah to some degree. For the time being at least.

So, you mock someone's personal opinion on who they pick as icon status as well as their musical taste? How about you give us a list of your iconic faves? So we can have a good laugh.

I don't enjoy the word icon, I feel it gets used out of context (as with Rihanna). The artists I love and admire include Siouxsie Sioux, Morrissey, Johnny Marr, David Bowie,Joe Strummer, Kate Bush, PJ Harvey. If you want to laugh at them then be my guest but your opinion is of no consequence to me.

And I stand by my comment about Rihanna, I don't believe the term icon is properly applied.
