Does the success of The Wanted baffle anyone else?

For all my sins I can see the appeal of One Direction and JLS. They are not really my kind of thing, but the music is catchy, infectious bubblegum pop. The Wanted are a totally different kettle of fish though. Their music is awful, forgettable MOR dirge and every single song sounds exactly the same. They also don't seem to have the media presence that JLS or 1D have, and if it wasn't for the bald one supposedly dating Tina from Corrie they'd be practically unheard of. Their whole look is also very dated and they actually remind me of Phixx (remember them) and those other bland early 00's boybands.

So obviously this new found success in America has just left me Who the bloody hell actually listens to them or buys their music? Apparently their management also own Capital FM which would explain and awful lot, although you have to wonder how that's allowed exactly?

Can anyone off explain it to me?

Its defo the Capital FM link which is behind their success I think but I too am baffled. They are average at best and in the 90s when boybands were everywhere this lot would never have survived. There is nothing special about them at all. They seem to have zero personality as a band yet all this success.

I went to see The Wanted in concert on tuesday

And i'm a 36 year old mum of 3 that went with my pal not my kids

I hate 1 direction and i'm not a fan of JLS but I like The Wanted, and that's baring in mind that my normal choice of music is rock and heavy metal.
They are just a bit of cheesy, I think most of their songs are happy and cheery and the are not bad looking either. And after seeing them live they can all actually sing.

I personally cant believe that success of 1 direction but its each to their own i suppose.

The comments I've read about them say, that their music is catchy. I don't think there are many boyband in America right now, One Direction are awfully young, so the older female audience have taken a liking to The Wanted. They also got Justin Bieber's manager to promote them in America, that might explain a lot.

I do agree, they give horrible interviews, Jay and Max have some sort of media training/clue, the others are plain awful.

Is Jay the youngest one? I find him really rude. There was an interview on TV last year and he slagged a load of celebs off. I just thought who are you exactly!!

No Nathan is the youngest, Jay is the one with the curly hair.

I think it's down to their links with JB's manager, Capital and the song itself. It's the type of song that many people who are not fans of boyands would like - it's quite laddish in a sense.

All sounds the same to me... They are a boyband, based solely on looks. It's basically take your pick as to which group you fancy most, never mind the music.

To be honest, I don't think The Wanted are based solely on looks, because most of my friend(teenage girls)think they're awful to look at!

They are the boyband that the older generation tend to like the best though(I actually walked in on my dad listening and singing along to their Battleground album a few days ago!), and thats probably because they don't look as perfect as JLS and OD! I also don't think they have bland personalities! They're hilarious in interviews also, they all have good voices(except Siva...sorry Siva ). Nathan especially...his voice just blows me away!

For anyone who doesn't think they can sing, go onto YouTube and watch one of their live cover versions of Iris!

Personally, I'm glad it's them who have gained popularity in the US first, rather than OD!

Not at all, let's face it One Direction and The Wanted are far more suitable and more accessable for young American teenage girls and beyond than the arrogant "blink and you've missed him" heavily body- guarded Beiber boy.

The only JLS member I could name is Marvin and that's only because he's going out with Rochelle from The Saturdays! (I think they're engaged now though).

Bunch of muppets, but 'glad you came' is a tune haha.

In fact, 'Glad you came' is better than anything JLS or OneDirection have ever released.

Interestingly that is the song which has gone top five in America which suggests to me they will be a one hit wonder out there.

Yeah probably. Nothing else really stands out for me.

I think if they bring out the right material and promote it till kingdom come then someone will buy it, America is a massive place, over 250 million people live there, they sold 180,000 copes this week to get them to no.5, so when you think out of 250 million only 180,000 bought it, its not that they're that popular, its that they have filled a niche in the American market (the boyband).

It's taken me a while to get them. I could only see one of them as good looking but then I am not in the age demograph to find them attractive and their interviews were always a bit dodgy but I think they do have great catchy pop songs and that's what IMO is giving them the success.

I guess they have come along at just the right time for american success with the resurgence of boy bands over there and here and good luck to them

They do have the right production team behind them. Scooter started to manage another singer from Canada, so JB and his friends (other Hollywood teens) made a music video of her song. It got over 5 million hits on youtube within a day.

It will be interesting to see if they get more success, or if this will be it.

I think the Glee cover is what did it myself. They can't rely on that sort of promo again so its all on their own heads now.

Not really. They were in the top half of the top 20 of US itunes before Glee aired. They have a catchy song that is guaranteed pop airplay. Glee can't make radios play them. They're at #9 on pop airplay.

Of course, but that is what their manager/promoter got for them. If they get half of the JB followers to like the Wanted as well, they are off to a good start.

Baffles me too. Think it must be the benefits of getting a song onto Glee and a rich sugar daddy.

But then if I only heard their songs on the radio I would maybe download them but I can't see how they work as a boyband myself but then i'm sadly not 12 anymore

One Direction on the other had I know that if I was still 12 I would have been all over them, but do not see it with The Wanted.

Will be interesting too see if both can sustain the initial hype in the states. The US doesn't really have the same appetite for boybands that Europe has and both The Wanted and One Direction are going to be constantly compared to Nsync who were massive on a whole other level over there (also Backstreet Boys but to a lesser extent)
And if people start making those comparisons then they might not compare so favourably. Because love them or hate them Nsync were the real deal talent wise. The Wanted and One D are wee bit average in that department but at least One Direction are all very good looking and charismatic that may work in their favour and against The Wanted.

Not really.

One Direction, JLS etc... thrive on their teen girl fan base. They ahve obsessed fans, but they also thrive on their looks which is really annoying. When people write about them (fan or critic) they always mention that they have the "teen girls" obsessing over them. To me it seems JLS and 1D walk around thinking they are Gods Gift. The Wanted just want to make music. No silly over the top shoots, no wild stories to tell how they all shagged some bird etc...

The Wanted have more of a wider fan base. Me for example, being a guy, The Wanted are the only boyband this century that I like. I liked Backstreet Boys in the 90s (cringe, I know), but a lot of my male friends like the Wanted but cannot stand JLS or 1D.

To the people that say it was because of Glee. Your wrong. Before Glee they were in the Top 15 on Itunes and were on #23 on the Hot 100 which itself is incredible for a boy band, never mind a UK boyband. Glee aired last week and gave it a boost but to think it flopped before is laughable.

They are the highest charting UK boyband ever. Speaks volumes. They have a big fanbase it seems, their Twitter/Facebook followers and Youtube views have doubled, or tripled in some cases in the last three weeks alone.
