Racing UK has launched a channel via IPTV on internet-connected Freeview HD boxes and is drawing up plans to introduce pay-per-view and VoD races.

The broadcaster, currently available via Sky and Virgin Media, is in a user-testing phase on Freeview HD devices, following a distribution deal with platform provider Connect TV.

The channel will shortly go fully live in Freeview HD slot 116, featuring beefed-up interactivity including the option to switch to a quarter-screen TV mode and view a range of data such as live odds, a racing card and jockey colours.

Racing UK marketing director Clive Cottrell said it was a cost effective way of securing distribution on the Freeview platform.

“We plan to take advantage of the internet connectivity and are looking at allowing people to gamble via their TVs, and also watch races they may have missed,” he said.

“We opted for distribution via Freeview rather than building a connected-TV app because it is omnipresent and doesn’t require much education.”

Connect TV managing director Phil Walder added: “We are able to give consumers extra free and paid content without forcing them to leave their main TV screen.”

It is probably unlikely to be HD as none of the other IPTV services which use Freeview to access their web site are.

This is yet another service that uses MHEG-IC that virtually none of the first generation HD boxes have.
