What is a mixtape?? - rapper seem to have them - how do they differ from an album?

A mixtape is usually what artists release as a bridge to the upcoming album or as a way of keeping fans interested.

Why not call it an album if it has say 12 songs....or an EP is the normal term for say 6. It must be da street down wid da kidz version of an EP

Mixtapes have been going for decades so there is nothing different or strange about it at all

I've done some research -

mixtapes have largely been replaced by mix CDs and shared MP3 playlists, which are more durable, can hold more songs, and require minutes (rather than hours) to prepare.

Hollywood gave me Million Dollar Man vibes straight away! First track definitely sounds like it was recorded around Born To Die period. Really need to hear full versions but they sound so promising

What they called a "mixtape" in the 1980's is very different to what they call a "mixtape" today in the Internet age, mind.

But yeah, there's nothing weird about Lana releasing a mixtape (although they are less common in her genre).

'Damn You' in particular sounds fantastic. I really hope we get a full version of the song.
