Quite a lot of talent on offer this season....
Joshua is IMO the only male contestant in the history of Idol to be in the same vocal ball park as Adam Lambert, and unlike Adam, who was something of a seasoned theatre performer competing in Idol aged 27, Joshua is only 19.
Jessica is almost the female version of Joshua, and very impressive. Has the same plaintive tone and pitch when she wants as similar-aged Thia from a couple of years ago, but unlike her can also let go with a throaty growl. Amazing at only 16.
The above two are likely to be the most consistently strong vocalists in the competition, and for me the stand outs.
Phillip is a unique singer. He can't help but be unique as he can only do his own thing, as group week showed. It makes him interesting and unpredictable, and he's easy on the eye. He looks to be in constipated agony while singing, such is the effort, with every lyric wrenched from his frame like a wild-eyed exorcism. That left leg wants tieing down too, or possibly weighting with a bladder bag. Not sure his voice would hold out beyond a half dozen songs in a gig/concert, if it's that much of a strain.
Elise has a lot of skills on her runs, but is she going to fall apart again like she did in that wailing second half of her song last week? You'd expect more poise at 28.
Erika, the singing DJ has a raunchy voice which I like too. She played it safe last week, hope she lets loose.
Deandre reminds me of Philip Bailey/Earth, Wind & Fire, which isn't a bad thing, so he gets my vote too. He has that 'hair Idol' thing going for him, with little girl fans, like Sanjaya or Tim Urban.
I was disappointed Creighton didn't get through, but he did himself no favours with that screamingly camp VT. I would have rated him second best male, vocally, to Joshua.
And while I'm disappointed Reed has left the building, I didn't feel he was good enough/right to be a solo artist. He belongs in a group. His group performance was one of the best I've ever seen on Idol, they were as slick as Manhattan Transfer.
