Do NOT get me wrong. I absolutely love some of the hits these girls have had out and I don't want any negative backlash in this thread, just opinions. Both girl bands have released some of the greatest songs. But I think The Sugababes are definitely who I think of when I think 'Britains biggest girl band'. The original line up didn't try and be sexy or anything, they're like Little Mix are now.

I always feel Sugababes are overlooked for this title. Even now I still listen to songs by the original Sugababes line up (and with Heidi).

The Spice Girls sold like 70 million and were known world wide. Their bubble years of 1996 to 1998 were just amazing. If Geri hadn't of left band in the middle of their fame they would have gone even further than they did.

You can't really compare any other British girl band to them. Geri in that Union Jack dress is a symbol of the 1990s. That is what being iconic is.

I'm not sure if those two are the best but the biggest British girl bands from what i've heard were

80's: Bananarama
90's: Spice Girls and All Saints
00's: Girls Aloud and Sugababes

Don't think there has been any truly big girlbands this decade out of the ones above i liked Spice Girls, All Saints and Sugababes the best. However the Sugababes should leave with some kind of high legacy in tact by splitting now in my opinion..

Sugababes (1.0 & 2.0) are my favourite girl group. But to suggest they're Britain's Biggest Girlband Ever... ludicrous.

Not Girls Aloud no and before them sugababes were es but persistent line up changes have diminished their credibility and Spice Girls ARE still and were our biggest Girl Group in terms of sales impact and pop culture Sugababes just aint up there with them.

It if you take out the sales aspect of girlbands, and really just class a group the "best" based on music, then absolutely 100% Sugababes come first place, some of the most original and unique pop music has come from them.

Maybe Girls Aloud aern't the biggest girl band ever. When that title is used they are referring t right now.

Spice Girls really are unbeatable
All Saints had lots of success
Atomic Kitten had some fair success
Sugababes have had 8 years at the top, but they're finished now too many line up changes.

When you say those other names Girls Aloud are defintely up there. Girl Groups are really tough to break,it's easy with boy bands because girls buy into them just because it's them. Girls are not so easy there are so many unsuccessful female group attempts. The saturdays are potentially breaking through too so deserve a mention. But Girls Aloud are a big success story. 20 top 10 singles. 6 platinum albums. 8 million record sales. 4 Number 1 singles. 2 Number 1 albums. Brit award performance and win in 2008. 1 Million of tour tickets sold. Cheryl Cole's solo career adds to it. They are defintely one of the most media high profile bands. They are a big success story what's great is no one expected it, they've done it because they put out great records.

Biggest Girl Group ever in the UK? Spice Girls.
Biggest active Girl Group right now in the UK? Girls Aloud. The Saturdays cannot sell albums as shown. They'll be back soon...
Biggest Girl Group in the world....The Supremes? Destiny's Child? TLC?

Sugababes a few years ago where bigger than GA, but they've been exchanging and taking back the title year on year, but Girls Aloud are the biggest active girl band right now in the UK and the so deserve it.

Sugababes and Girls Aloud's success has been mostly within Europe and have rarely scored major hits outside of. The Spice Girls were truly global and have sold over 70 million records worldwide to date. They were bigger than Bananarama, Girls Aloud, Atomic Kitten, All Saints, Eternal and Sugababes. They were also bigger than Destiny's Child and TLC worldwide.

I agree, i just cannot commend Girls aloud enough. they are a truly brilliant group. There albums are AMAZING - never a bad song. They truly deserve to be as massive as Spice. I cannot argue with Spice being bigger, they where HUGE. But GA deserve to be as big as them, there music is insanely good for a pop group. Go GA! Reunion coming soon... they really have flourished these last 10 years, so proud! Big fanhere.

Neither the Sugababes nor Girls Aloud are comparable to big the Spice Girls were. The Spice Girls are the biggest girl group during my lifetime for sure.

I'd say even the Pussycat Dolls were bigger than Girls Aloud and the Sugababes tbh.

I like all these groups though. Lots of good songs.

Oh forgot to mention one thing, spice maybe very good and all in terms of sales. But i couldn't get through there albums, the singles where OUTSTANDING but the album songs left alot to be desired.I can only listen to their hits collection. Don't even get me started on the Dolls reference about the word filler comes to mind.

Girls Aloud on the other hand have never made a bad album. Just listen to the amazingness of Tangled Up. Not a bad song in sight. That group should be selling what destiny's child are, i know they arenot the greatest singers but which pop band has the greatest singers....spice where average singerstoo. Very Original i agree, but i tried listening to their albums and couldn't take to any of their songs, they really did release their best songs as singles..

So i propose the following question to you people....which is the best girl group in the UK quality-wise.
1. Aloud are best in quality. Never a bad single, song, album in sight. I can name 20 songs on thier albums good enough to be singles.
2. Spice girls. Some original singles and a good hits collection. Album songs....not as good as the singles.
3. Sugababes. A collection of amazing singles. Some very good albums especially the latter ones quality wise. The early albums do suffer from the filler thing.
4. Atomic Kitten. Great hits collection, again albums aren't as good.
5. The Saturdays. Amazing singles released up to now. Albums are actually very good, but they're not released enough to be higher on my list.
6. All Saints. Some good gems on the albums, and some very impressive singles but something amiss with them forme - the albums had some good songs but not enough of them.

Ga ruin with a iron fist. 'The Promise' just sums up their amazingness.

But that isn't what this thread is about, so your point is invalid within the context of it. The biggest ever British girlband is the Spice Girls.

I get it....GA not your thing, thats YOUR opinion. Go on spotify listen to the Spice albums, then listen to GA Tangled Up...
I struggle to see how anyone could recognize the amazingness of Girls Aloud. Truly their albums are amazing, a real rarity in pop groups. Never a bad song.

Yes Spice Girls are the biggest seller - cultural icon whatever. I admit Spice had amazing singles. But.. their albums had me bored..
But quality?
Girls Aloud hands down above every group. 6 AMAZING albums. That group deserve to bigger than any other. If we where to assess the best girl group albums? Tangled Up is the best girl band album i've heard in the last 20 years. Spice may have sold more, but still....GA albums are the best quality wise.

This is EXACTLY what this thread is about, the OP doesnt mention anything about sales whatsoever when discussing the biggest girlband, everyone else seems to have waded in to the sales thing when that wasnt even what this was about, not once in the first post are sales mentioned.

I would say if you were talking music then All Saints set the tone which Sugababes followed but after 2006 I would say Sugababes weren't producing the same sort of quaity they were previously.

Pure Shores, Never Ever, War of Nerves and Black Coffee top anything Sugababes ever did.

All Saints were bloody amazing at what they did.

... but the OP seems to believe it should be the Sugarbabes .. Clearly they are choosing who they like over who has sold the most. Which negates the point of this thread completely.

Put all the success of all the UK groups together and it still wouldn't come close to the success the Spice Girls had.

Blueface, how is GA active? It's been 3 years? since they released anything.

Sugababes were good, but they ruined it all with the member changes.

Collectively, Sugababes have sold more than Girls Aloud, in both albums and singles. But neither of them match Spice Girls' sales domestically and abroad.

Tangled Up is the best album to come from a girl band imo. Amazing pop album.

Order of success in terms of album sales in UK.

Spice Girls
Sugababes
Girls Aloud
Eternal
Atomic Kitten
All Saints

Not sure if it's right, but just adding up their sales and thats the order i'm getting.

the Spice Girls were on another level to all other girl bands the UK has produced, only the Beatles can rival their fame and impact...in my lifetime (1987-Now) I haven't experienced a bigger cultural phenomenon

Mel C's great on her own and Nadine could go international with the right promo.
