I think one of the reasons is that they got girls on their side. They didn't go for the whole sexy image and had amazing pop singles - they didn't try too hard, they weren't the beat vocally but were great performers.

Comparing the original lineup of Sugababes to one of those crappy X Factor acts? Nah.

But I agree, up until 4.0 Sugababes were much, much better than Girls Aloud and Spice Girls. Though Melanie C is amazing solo, i'm going to her Brighton gig on Wednesday

Don't think there has been any truly big girlbands this decade out of the ones above i liked Spice Girls, All Saints and Sugababes the best. However the Sugababes should leave with some kind of high legacy in tact by splitting now in my opinion..”

10's: The Saturdays and Little Mix

I forgot about All Saints.

They are amazing, excluding that awful reunion album.

Studio 1 wasn't that awful Lostlslands! But never lived up to All Saints and Saints and Sinners album. All Saints did great considering Spice Girls was out year before. I remember jumping up and down when Never Ever beat Spice Up Your Life for best video at the Brits 1998!

Little Mix have had 1 single so far. That is like saying Man utd are the best side of the season after the first game in August
To be honest, the op is talking a load of bollox, and when it comes to chart success at the moment girl bands are nowhere to be seen.

Spice Girls are the biggest girlband ever, no doubt.

Neither Sugababes nor Girls Aloud are the 2nd biggest girlband of all time, but I think the Sugababes are much more popular and acclaimed than GA. Sugababes are well known worldwide and they still book shows and concerts after all the line-up changes. GA are popular in the UK ( but even in the UK the Babes have done better I think, not sure), but they haven't done well in other markets. Just saying...

despite the sugababes `worldwide success` they are evenly pegged in terms of total records sold. the girls are far richer than the sugababes past and present. just saying.

Reunion coming soon... they really have flourished these last 10 years, so proud! Big fanhere.”

GA never a bad song???? i understand your a super fan of them and cheryl tweedy but there music is dreadful and how many cover versions????

Take GA to the states and japan and lets see how they sell there, the uk has some of the worst acts that are only good here. GA are the female version of westlife.

Why do they deserve to be as big as the spice girls??? they won a "talent" show and didnt they get someone other vocalists to sing the chorus to sound of the underground?

hardly and what does it matter how the girls would have fared worldwide? they sold millions of records in the uk.

Female version of Westlife, don't make me ANGRY!

Westlife - dull, covers, stools, predictable
Girls Aloud - creative pop, fun, great energy,
Do your self a favour and listen to Girls Aloud on Spotify.

How the heck can you make that comparison,im sure you're just trying to be ironic!.

Sorry but Girls Aloud are above Sugababes now and have been for a fair few years now. Maybe in the earlier years they where bigger but in fewer years Girls Aloud have sold almost evenly. I think Girls Aloud personally are the best girl group the UK has ever had. There albums are amazing. You have a line up of the perfect pop group - everyone's so different and so similar and everyone seems to identify with a member for what ever reason. Sugababes have had some hits that i admit are good and some damn good albums, but currently GA are bigger than Sugababes and have been since early 2008.

Just to reconfirm because everyone keeps confusing it.
Charts & Sales is the same thing.
No is denying Spice Girls are heads and shoulders above anyone else past present or future sales wise, but the pointi was making was that in my opinion the Spice Girls albums where extremely weak bar the singles. The singles where very good yes, but the albums to me felt very filler. In comparison, Girls Aloud have had a knack of really creative inventive pop music that surprises you, is fun, different than anything else, sparked and oozing with personality and so relatable. I think Girls Aloud are quite simply with S Club 7 the best of the best of british pop groups.

Quality wise FOR ME- Girls Aloud
Sales wise- it's undeniable Spice Girls.

To Summarise, as everyone is going on a tangent!

Sales wise
1. Spice Girls (sold 8x anyone else!)
2. Sugababes (GA will easily overtake later this year, more releases, more active years)
3. Girls Aloud (just missing out by a few 100k)
4. Atomic Kitten (sold well for a few years)
5. All Saints (They had big potential, they just ruined it for themselves)
6. The Saturdays (Up and coming, but seem to have a problem selling albums

Quality wise in my own opinion
1. Girls Aloud - flawless albums and singles collection
2. Sugababes - a few turds on the way but generally good
3. Spice Girls - amazing singles collection, meh albums
4. The Saturdays - despite no big success a stomper of a hits collection and some decent albums
5. Atomic Kitten - they had some good songs, but they had alot of filler on their albums
6. All Saints - Credit for songwriting and being different, but not enough good stuff for me bar a few good singles.

If i was buying the records....I'd get the hits collections for All siants, atomic kitten, the sats and Spice.I'd get Sweet 7, catfights, change, taller in more ways and three - i'd snub the first two way too much filler and for Girls Aloud i'd buy every album because truly every album is good.

Why doesn't everyone else do it the same. No one seems to agree and this isn't heading anywhere. We area biased of our own opinions. There's a difference what we cannot deny sales where Spice prevails, but for me quality is with GA.

Oh my word. SOTU!? You can blatantly hear the girls aloud voices on the SOTU record. That is media nonsense you have just read without much else knowledge. Everyone has backing singers in the back of their records and SOTU needs that oomph. GA have sang it live without backing singers, and i think that was just a nonsense rumor put out by Cowell who failed with that song with his own girl group, and Pete Waterman to damage their reputation so the boys to win. That is truly nonsense.

Girls Aloud cover versions. I'll Stand By You which was AMAZING. I Think We're Alone Now wasn't bad, it was not their best but it was competent which is more than i could say for some of the other groups. Jump which most will agree was the turning point for them.

Girls Aloud don't have any bad albums. SOTU is very good mixture of a lot of different styles of music. WWTNS is a pop master piece. Chemistry had great reviews, really different and original. Tangled Up is the best girl band album i've ever heard - a stomper from start to finish. Out Of Control which despite their success was another amazing mature adult pop album.

Go on Spotify listen to following songs.
Crocodile Tears.
Watch Me Go
Girl Overboard
Fling
Real Life
Miss You Bow Wow
Revolution in The Head
Girls Allowed

and then tell me this group isn't anything sort of amazing.

No girl group were properly huge or had the cultural impact that the Spice Girls had. They really do deserve the title and I'm not even a huge fan of theirs.

I like GA but they have to thank Xenomania for a huge amount of their success - amazing producers/writers.

And I agree with the poster who suggested All Saints paved the way for Sugababes. The Babes 2.0 were fantastic - I still listen to Angels With Dirty Faces and Taller In More Ways, great pop albums, with a slight edge.

As for The Saturdays, they should be a bigger group than they are, considering they've had no competition (I know SB 4.0 were around but people don't take them seriously anymore).

Thing what helped the Spice Girls too is the same thing which helped The Beatles in the 60s.

The mid 1990s saw a huge change happening across Britain. It was an amazing time. You had mad cows, Tony Blair and the rise of New Labour, the whole indie 'Brit pop' scene, the real IT girls, The Ab Fab culture, Princess Diana and then the Spice Girls.

Sad thing is it all seemed to end when Diana died.

Spice an an amazing top album. Its one of those records were every single would have been a number 1 if they had released it. They actually had four number 1 singles from the album and there was only 10 tracks on it.

Spiceworld wasn't up to the standard of Spice but it was still an amazingly pop tastic record.

Forever however was a fall from grace. They missed Geri greatly.

True ^^ Girls Aloud owe everything to XENOMENIA just like Spice Girls owe theirs to ABSOLUTE and RICHARD STANNARD unless they wrote everything themselves which they did not.

Seriously people listen to those Girls Aloud records i recommended. They're quite amazing. I just cannot say the same for everything else. It's like the first JLS album i can listen from start to finsh, but the other suck cause they got filler. Without bias, no GA album has filler. 5 Sugababes albums are very good, the other 2 are filler. The Sats have 3 good albums, minimal flavour.

Spice Girls where good at releasing the best song as singles, they wern't stupid to releasing the crapper tracks on the album for everyone. GA have gems hidden on their albums never heard by the masses.

It all depends on the material really, it's hard to predict.
Miranda Cooper, who wrote a lot of their material, has left Xeno, I know Brian Higgins is still there.

Or maybe they will have more involvement in writing.
We all know that Nicola and Nadine can write, their solo albums prove this.

erm The Spice Girls had amazing album tracks. Love Thing, Something Kind Of Funny, Last Time Lover, Naked, Do It, Never Give Up On The Good Times. Just for a few.

I respect you are a Girls ALoud fan but don't make out these tracks are crap just because they don't match your viewpoint.

I remember back in 1997 Spice Girl fans were furious that Love Thing never got a release as there had been a big campaign for it.

Personally, and I hate to make this a war, I think the track Viva Forever is the best pop song ANY UK girl band has released. Goodbye is not that far behind it.

Well they're up against

1. Little Mix- should be quite massive, not JLS massive but they'll do well i reckon.

2. The Saturdays - who have already proved despite how many great singles they release the public have no faith in their albums.

Sugababes are on a 'unofficial' break.
Girls Aloud are coming back later this year.

Think Girls Aloud will have a huge greatest hits this year selling 800k there abouts
Little Mix should sell well 500k
The Sats will do 200k probably with some tricks up their bag.

Think GA will easily dominate.
Yes material is a big issue as Xenomenia are critical to their success but i think Brian Higgins is still working somewhere and i'm sure there's enough of a back catalogue for the girls they've saved up the last 2-4 years, as well as they might reconcile and work together - even Brian and Miranda working independently with other writers and it all coming together would do too.

PS to the person who posted the Spice thing. I think Spice released a phenomenal collection of singles i have nothing but praise for Mama, Wannabe, Stop, 2 Become 1 etc - but when i last heard the album it didn't sound THAT amazing too me. There where defintely alot of filler there.

Listened to Love Thing and Naked on Spotify right now. Not impressed, sorry. They just sound nothing special. When you hear there singles they are undeniably good, but those 2 songs are quite average. the first better than the latter, but still not much there. I agree Viva Forever is quite good, and Goodbye also stands out. But on albums GA kick easily.

I am a Girls Aloud fan and maybe i'm letting my bias get through slightly, but i honestly believe despite my fandom to the group their albums are unbeatable. I still cannot believe how amazing Tangled Up is i was listening to it yesterday.

Sugababes made a few stellar albums not ALL, but a few where very good. Spice Girls the Greatest Hits is an album i played recently and it was flawless 9/10 stuff some singles even better than GA, but the albums sound weak. There's something up with production too! it all sounds abit lack of effort Does anyone get what i am saying!? I dont see it
