You can argue all day long about which girl group is the best... that's just preference.

But there is no question that The Spice Girls are not only the 'biggest' girl group in British history but the 'biggest' girl group globally of all time.

I gave you the benefit of the doubt, and listened to these. Apart from a lot of noise I hear no quality music here. Musically each of these sound the same and it's difficult to determine if it's Cheryl, Nadine or whoever singing. In my opinion these don't even match Spice Girls B-Side quality.

Quality wise these tracks don't come close to album tracks on Spice, Spiceworld and Forever: Spice and Spiceworld are very eclectic albums which is part of their charm.

Listened to Love Thing and Naked on Spotify right now. Not impressed, sorry. They just sound nothing special. When you hear there singles they are undeniably good, but those 2 songs are quite average. the first better than the latter, but still not much there. I agree Viva Forever is quite good, and Goodbye also stands out. But on albums GA kick easily.

I am a Girls Aloud fan and maybe i'm letting my bias get through slightly, but i honestly believe despite my fandom to the group their albums are unbeatable. I still cannot believe how amazing Tangled Up is i was listening to it yesterday.

Sugababes made a few stellar albums not ALL, but a few where very good. Spice Girls the Greatest Hits is an album i played recently and it was flawless 9/10 stuff some singles even better than GA, but the albums sound weak. There's something up with production too! it all sounds abit lack of effort Does anyone get what i am saying!? I dont see it ”

Lets just agree to disagree then.

Spice to me is what Tangled Up is to you I guess but I think you are way off calling the album below par tbh.

I will say this though. Some of the best Spice Girl hidden gems were the b sides such as Take Me Home.

On the subject of solo stuff. Nicola, Nadine and Cheryl have done some great albums i feel. None are perfect but they're decent attempts.

What do i think of the Spice Solo stuff!?
Emma's Free Me album is amazing. She did really good with that. Life with Mono was very good also. I bought both i liked those albums that much.

Geri did good with her recent album. Victoria disappointed me with her solo album but Mind Of Its Own was very good. Mel C has a knack at this independent thing - some amazing singles she's done but her albums disappoint me Mel B is a bit of a free spirit to say the least! not heard much of her music.

Think it'd be nice if Spice did reunite for the Olympics thing, but Victoria needs to get her ego sorted. Girls Aloud could take that slot if Spice don't want it...

I agree they are the biggest girl group unlikely to be toppled either.

Girls Aloud are my preference best group, but i do think they deserve to be even massiver. Songs like 'The Show' and 'Love Machine' make me so proud to be a fan of this group.

Wow i'm stunned you don't like those songs, in terms of same sound the same could be said about Spice Girls.

I really disagree about your point, the girls aloud songs are better produced, each song sounds different.

Cheryl's and Nadine's voices are poles apart!

This is 'The Promise' by Girls Aloud
In My opinion the best thing a girl band has ever put out

Nothing will ever top this performance by the Spice Girls.

Just amazing and the buzz was incredible. Geri's image in the Union Jack dress went on every front page around the world.

Reading this thread reminds me of the infamous argument on CD:UK between Melanie C and Louis Walsh. Classic!

Wow. Some of the delusion in here. Why does anyone get so obsessed over a bloody girl group?

Biggest UK Girl Group of all time = Spice Girls. Like it or not, they were a phenomenon. Not just 5 girls who won a "talent" competition and had it all handed to them on a plate.

End of argument.

The Spice Girls also had to fight their way to the top in a very male dominated UK music industry.

They were told they couldn't ever go on the front of a magazine because they were girls so wouldn't sell. Ironicly Smash Hits decided to give them a chance, not until after Wannabe had been released however, and the magazine ended up being one of their biggest selling of all time!

The Spice Girls story would make a fantastic movie. Certainly those early years leading to success. Reading some of the things they had to go to just to even start recording an album its amazing they even stayed together.

But it's not just about winning a talent show, they did have longevity as group. I don't think anyone expected them to have more than 2 albums max! So many acts have won talent shows and have been dropped after a couple of singles.

But yes Spice Girls were a one off, that level of sucess was spectacular! But it was the songs, the marketing and the their personalities which helped this.

It's odd that a girlgroup like The Saturdays haven't had a number one single. All Brit girlbands mentioned as well as B Witched and The Nolans from Ireland, who all have been around for a few years have all managed at least one #1 even Eternal who were overshadowed by Spice Girls and All Saints at the time.

Completely agree. Good post

Do you think Girls Aloud would have been as successful if they hadn't been on Popstars: The Rivals? I don't think so. They were and are nothing special. Some of their songs are quite catchy, but I don't see anything that sets them apart from other girl groups. I prefer Sugababes, All Saints etc. Edgy pop instead of cheesy pop.

The way they were formed was like a talent competition - it just wasn't on broadcast on television.

I struggle to see how anyone could recognize the amazingness of Girls Aloud. Truly their albums are amazing, a real rarity in pop groups. Never a bad song.

Yes Spice Girls are the biggest seller - cultural icon whatever. I admit Spice had amazing singles. But.. their albums had me bored..
But quality?
Girls Aloud hands down above every group. 6 AMAZING albums. That group deserve to bigger than any other. If we where to assess the best girl group albums? Tangled Up is the best girl band album i've heard in the last 20 years. Spice may have sold more, but still....GA albums are the best quality wise.”

What are you on about?? I LOVE LOVE Girls Aloud!! lol They're my 2nd favorite girlband after the SG's - but factually speaking, SG's are the biggest girlband every produced by Britain, and the "Nah" in the OP's thread title makes no difference to that.

"If we were to assess the best girl group albums? Tangled Up is the best girl band album i've heard in the last 20 years. Spice may have sold more"

But, we're not iff-ing and butting here, because that could take us onto any topic of conversation. We're being asked to comment on GA & SG's being the best girlbands ever. I have given my opinion that I dont think GA are in the same league as SG's and that the Spices hold the title as THEE biggest girlband ever, which is correct

So what else are you measuring it on? Cultural success? Pop references? Awards won worldwide? Or just your own opinion? Because I'm not really sure how you measure an artists true suyccess other than record sales?

I was 10-12 years old in the Spice Girls definitive years.... wow. I am so glad that i experienced being a spice girls fan then, it was amazing to be part of the 'girl power' movement.

No girl band will ever come close to their success and record sales.

I would actually love to meet any of them now and say thanks for being such a big part of my pre-teen years especially Geri & Mel C, they were my faves!

I cant really see the fascination in girl bands or boy bands.... Neither are really there for the talent and to quote George Harrison on the Spice Girls... "Not very interesting". However, does anyone have a clue who Girls Aloud or Sugababes are outside the UK? The only one to have made any impact was The Spice Girls. As for The Saturdays... I'm not really sure what is the point in them, I think they seem clued up though, them and jls are both the same, stick out the odd average pop song and makes a few quid off it. The Saturdays have it all figured out, be signed to their own record label so they never get dropped.

In your opinion!

IMO, they left some of their best tracks unreleased (Naked, Something Kinda Funny, Never Give Up On The Good Times, Do It).

Soooo uninteresting he invited one of them [Geri] to his home to have a chat

"I was round that Beatle's house - which one was it? George Harrison. This was before he died, and he was amazing," she says, excitedly. "He was indulging me in all these wonderful Beatles stories and he put the Beatles and the Spice Girls in the same breath by referring to the mania of it all, which nearly made me collapse. I sat there like a little puppy doll, hanging on to his every word. Then the phone rang and it was that hypnotist guy [Uri Geller], who wanted to come over with Michael Jackson, and George said he was busy. He passed over Michael Jackson for me! It was a humbling moment."

Doesn't mean he liked the music... He was always friendly towards people but still had an opinion on their music.
