TV only loading in half screen
Hello all.
Can anybody help me help someone else. My father in law has a 42" LG which is about 2-3 years old. But has recently developed an annoying habit of when turned on from being off all night (from cold) and even just a short while. Half of the available picture is missing. It's not compressed into half the screen but missing entirely. Always on the left hand side. Fortunately up to now it does eventually fully appear but wonder for how long. Has this happened to anybody else? And is this any easy/cheap fix. Being pensioners they could do without buying a new one. Any help or advice here will be most appreciated. Many thanks to all who reply |

Is it a LCD or Plasma set? If it's LCD one possibility is a problem with the backlighting. Perhaps one half of the screen backlight is on it's way out?
If it is then if you look very closely at the "blank" half of the screen you should see the image, might be more apparent by shining a torch at the screen. If it is just the backlighting then it may be fixable assuming you can find a decent TV repairer and the spare parts are available. |

Thanks for your reply.
Yes it's LCD. Will advise father in law to try torch idea and take it from there. Thanks once more |

Sorry to say this sounds like a faulty screen tab. There is a dodge to repair it which a local tv repair guy might take on,otherwise a replacement screen is the only cure, which would be uneconomical of course.

I would say in some cases half screen could just be the tcon board.
On many LCD sets, the tcon board connects to the screen with two ribbon cables. So a failure of one half of the tcon could result in that fault. If it were my set, I would take a punt and look for a second hand tcon board. there are plenty of people selling second hand tv panels both as a business, and individually on the likes of ebay. If the replacement tcon fixes it, then great. If not then it's probably the panel and the set is scrap. You can then re sell the new tcon to get most, if not all your money back. |
